TANKS! the 15mm game
« on: 28 April 2017, 12:51:03 PM »
so I've seen this a couple of times in the local store and I'm curious what people make of it.
£18 for a starter and £6-7 per tank doesn't seem too bad as I assume your only gonna reach platoon levels primarily.
I've heard its sort of like X-wing. but with tanks.
but being done by battlefront...well...puts me off a little

It's not that bad. Played a few games around Christmas, it's very beer and pretzels in its simplicity. I'd say like X-Wing it's a great starter set, but you will be tempted to go all in on the expansions.

Personally I see no reason in tank only warfare (it rarely happens!), I much prefer (admittingly abstractual) attempt of Flames of having infantry, artillery, air, etc working together as combined arms.

It is a fun little game and it does definitely have some X-Wing flavor. I find it great to have a quick game with my nine-year-old son, but I am mainly collecting the tank models to use with the upcoming tank game from the Lardies.

I agree with Aaron.  I got it to play with my 12yo, and have also put it on the table at a local convention as a quick and dirty time-filler.  X-Wing with tanks is a perfect description.

Hmm sounds pretty tempting. and after looking up it seems the panther can be a jagdpanther...which is pornographic in nature and gives me a panther turret to do a Tiger I with Panther turret...smallturn was it called?

had a quick game of it today and loved it. certainly something I could enjoy. X-wing meets axis and allies.
I love the puma but noticed they seem to have no stats for the 20mm version.
do they simply consider this too small to even be worth mentioning? I like that variant :(

It's a fun little game, by no means a simulation, but then it's not meant to be - there is a little tactical flexibility (or cheese) to be had once you begin to spot the good tank/character/crew/kit combos, but it's best played as a fun beer & pretzels game (as I think has already been said).
As to the 20mm armed 234, the option's on the sprues because the models are also intended for FOW - but I imagine they figure that version (234/1) doesn't have a place in a tank combat game, while the 234/2 (Puma) & 234/3 (Pak-Wagon) are both capable of taking on tanks (in the game at least).

Think of it as World of Tanks on the table top and how cool yet how silly that simulation is.

If you're having fun with it then you've got all you need.

I enjoyed world of tanks as a simple arcade tank shoot em up game. I never took it seriously.
but I was thinking it would make a great demo game on an 8x8 table with 1/35th models hehe

I wish it had been X-wing for tanks.  Unfortunetly they took most of the bad ideas from X-Wing and few of the good.

It does not use "order dials" so no pre-planning or suprises.  Does use the weird multi-die resolution system - OK for X-wing but makes no sense for a tank battle.  Armor and guns stats very suspect.

Good idea not well executed.

I love tanks, Mostly because i hate number tracking.

I can see why those who wanted something more in depth or historically focused would avoid it, But as a nice pre game game or something i can run a few games of in an hour it's great.

(It's also a really basic rule system so if you wanted to us eit for spaceships, hover tanks, car wars, mechs ect ect ect you only need to make your own cards.)
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

thank god for no dial haha.
while I loved X-wing and attack wing I don't want 500 tokens per ship just to play the damn game

I'm with James.  While I like X-Wing, they took the perfectly elegant Wings of War and added one too many levels to it.  Granted, Tanks went the other direction, but although it may be simple, it's a great pick-up game that can be taught in minutes.

I agree that its simplicity is its saving grace, it keeps the game moving quickly, keeps games (generally) fairly short & is extremely easy to pick up.
