What's the Quote? -- Pulp Alley
« on: 28 April 2017, 04:44:44 PM »
As you may well know, many of the Pulp Alley cards include a small bit of text that is unrelated to the rules. For example, somewhere on a card called Limping you may find, "That will slow 'em down." Sometimes this text comes from books or movies, and sometimes it comes from something said during playtesting and it just sticks.

We are close to completing 3 new card packs. So here's your chance to suggest some text for Pulp Alley cards. To help you out, I'll list the card titles below - although some may change....

It's a long story and not one to go into here..

But myself and some friends I used to work with used to say

"I think I folded a bone!" If we had a bit of a "Mishap" It may work for limping! :)

I don't know what the card effect may be, but might I suggest a snippet from Casablanca?

Misinformed

“The waters? What waters? We’re in the desert.”

“I was misinformed.”

I associate this one with Babylon 5 but I'm sure it's got a longer pedigree than that.

Hidden Agenda

"No-one here is quite what they appear"

A few lines from classic noir:

Bravado

Go ahead and shoot. You’ll be doing me a favour.

Bad Break

That’s life. Whichever way you turn, fate sticks out a foot to trip you.

Manipulation

With my brains and your looks, we could go places.

Modern Noir:

Carry on

And after I pull off that miracle, maybe I'll go punch out God.

Despair

There's wrong, and there's Wrong, and there's this.

Retaliate

She doesn't quite chop his head off. She makes a Pez dispenser out of him.

Not at all Noir:

Barmy

Cluck, cluck, gibber, gibber my old man's a mushroom.

Slightly more original:

Call of madness

Not only did he hear the call of madness, he answered it and signed up for a year's subscription.

Indecisive

Now leave me to ponder each of these unpalatable options.

Playing for time:

I don't wanna hurt you, you don't wanna hurt me. What say we sit down and talk this through?

Reeling

So, that's the best you can do, is it? Actually ... that really hurts.

Indecisive

"Now's not the time to prevaricate about the bush!"

"Captain, a bit more alacrity, if you please."

Bad Break - "Looks like I got dealt a card from the bottom of the deck, don't it?"

Grudge - "My name is ________. You kill my father. Prepare to die!" {The Princess Bride}
... or "I've hated you since high school, you supercilious twerp!"

Leverage - "I can get the DA to go easy on you, if you just tell me where you hid the loot."
... or "I would suggest these photos are not something you'd want your wife to see, or the newspapers."

Limping - "Sorry friends. Looks like I've developed a little hitch in my git along."

Manipulation - "Why are you still playing the role of sidekick, Tonto? I think most of us could see you as the leader of your own league. All you need to do is play your cards right."

Misinformed - "It appears that my source was not so reliable as her price would suggest."
... or "But I paid good money for this misinformation!"

Play for Time - "Wait! Don't you first want to tell me all about your nefarious plan? It may be a while before you again have such a captivated audience."

Staggering - "Stagger, stagger, crawl, crawl, crawl, stagger..." {Yellow Beard}

Suffering - "Ouch! That experience was not on my bucket list!"
... or "I suppose you're going to say that I should always look on the bright side of life, and whistle a ditty."
{Life of Brian}

Take Control - "Who's in charge here?!? Right! Looks like I am!"

Unseen Shot - "Whoa! That came out of nowhere!"
... or "Yikes! Didn't see that one coming!"

Unseen Strike - "Damn, these ________ are good at hiding!"
... or "Where did you come from?!? What are you, some kind of ninja warrior?"

 Room for one more?

The Shadow Legacy

Bad Break: Why do things just never go my way?

Blunder: I'm not sure you wanted to do that!

Grudge: You'll pay one of these days.....

Hidden Agenda: Now what could I possibly have to gain from that?

Leverage: Nice place you've got here. It'd be a shame if something happened to it.

Limping: It's just a twinge.

Manipulation: No, I'm sure it was your idea and it couldn't possibly fail.

Misinformed: Well that's what I read in the newspapers.

Play for time: Sorry, could you just run through your evil plan one more time?

Reeling: Oh he's not getting back up from that one in a hurry.

Suffering: (Gasps)  I'll be fine.... It's just a flesh wound..... (sound of body hitting floor).

Take control: Ok, this is the plan........

Unseen shot: Where did that come fro......(slump)

Unseen strike: We're fine as long as they don't get behind us.
