Great set of minis for those bouncers, like the two robots in particular, where do they come from?

Neither deserves to lose on this one! Admiral, the richness of colors and the flawless shading -- wow!  :o

Matt, your gladiators look like they were done with an airbrush on life-size models...perfection!

Benbow, one look at your entry and I knew you were going to ruin my mom's Mother's Day. I'll get you some day! *waves fist menacingly*

Awesome painting, great entry!

Those DA are extremely well done and crisp (I know I did many of them)  Hair and heads are especially great + background of the arena is insane with whites and golds. And deepness of the photography with all details make me sad panda.

But while I think that Admiral terrain is to red to my taste - it works with the miniatures so well they look like they spent all the day around and have rust red dust on their.
Its extremely well matched with the palette of the miniatures themselves.

Gentlemen I salute you both

Two beautiful entries. Brilliant examples of miniatures art, both of you.
Again, I thought this would be a close match. The detail on the arena figures is sumptuous. Very fine, subtle and smooth painting.
But I guess the sheer, arresting visual impact of the Admiral's scene and characters delivers a punch that's pretty hard to live with. I am exceptionally glad I wasn't up against this one  :o

Excellent job on both of these.  I still haven't voted yet, this one is really tough.

I don't usually like clear/Perspex bases, but they look great on that marble arena floor!

I don't like them either- seemed like the best option in this case though. I plan to use the gladiators mostly in the arena, but might want them for 40K or something similar and the marble floor would look extra weird in any other context :)

They are usable in neo-Necromunda - Shadow War: Armageddon

But the marble whites alone are worth the clear plastic IMHO

Both excellent entries here.

I'm quite surprised at the differential in voting here. The elves are very well painted figures!

I guess though it's the whole look-and-feel that people are voting for... Everyone loved the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie?!? :)

Both works to be proud of for sure.

thanks

The painting on display here is amazing - both are wonderful entries. I can't help feeling, though - and I say this as a great admirer of Dr. Mathias's work - that the picture of the Eldar seems a little washed out, because of all the white. As a result, everything feels a little diffuse - even the miniatures seem disconnected from each other, and a little scattered. In contrast, the rust and reds in the Admiral's entry seem to compress everything, to pull the focus to the grouping of miniatures, and the saturated colours as a result seem much more intense. Does any of that make sense? I teach literature, not art, so maybe everything I've said is completely wrong, but that's what I see when I look at these entries (well, that, and a deep yearning to be able to paint half as well as either!). Also, this has reminded me how much I love that Kev White sculpt of the guy with the little alien on his shoulder - I'll have to track it down!

That's very accurate actually. This setup was really difficult to photograph correctly for a variety of reasons and is dull looking, soft focus, and generally lackluster. After a re-shoot with not much better results I just rolled with it. Without going back and looking through my previous LPL defeats I think it's pretty safe to say this is my Waterloo :)

I did wonder, Dr. Mathias, although individually the miniatures are wonderful. The face of the guy on the right, for example, is fantastic.
