PULP ALLEY: Dead Man's Party AAR
« on: 30 May 2017, 04:04:01 AM »

Just north of Pasadena's old town, in the Altadena foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, the once-grand Walburton estate, with its turreted castle and gothic chapel, lies deserted and weedgrown. No-one has lived there for a dozen years, since that night when Jacob A. Walburton, his wife Ramona, and their four guests, described as close friends, all perished during a private costume party. Police found poison in the punch bowl, and uncovered a wealth of scandal about the three couples, but no solution to the mystery of who killed them or why was ever determined. Eventually, the case went cold, effectively closed as a probable murder/suicide, and as the years passed the estate gained local notoriety for the ghosts said to haunt the castle and its grounds. The specters are described as altogether terrifying, and bearing the likenesses of the six victims, still wearing their party costumes. They wander the estate seeking, it is said, justice...that is, for the true story of their deaths to be known at last.
The castle has now been purchased by G. Randolph Mullins, Bay City's colorful newspaper and radio station magnate, who -- with an eye to publicity and newspaper sales -- has offered a large cash reward to any intrepid ghost-chasers who can rid the place of its supernatural squatters. An additional reward will be given to anyone who can solve the mystery surrounding the deaths of the former owners and their guests. Ghosts, of course, are mostly nocturnal, so darkness will add its visual limitations, as well as its foreboding ambiance, to the leagues' efforts at ghost busting.
But heck, who's afraid of a few ghosts, anyway?

It was a great game. I wanted to include one more photo, because I thought Rags outdid himself putting together a really nice table:

Also--whether this inspired him or not, if you ever get to Pasadena, go north on Lake to the ruins of the Cobb Estate (now a park). Site of some great (though brutal) hikes, and the foundations of a really ostentatious mansion. Which the family had to donate for some reason.

Thanks to both of you for the kind words.  ;)

Yes...the Cobb estate is the reason the scenario is set in Altadena.  Other direct inspirations were this old movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051744/?ref_=nv_sr_6, and this old board game: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2487/why, both of which I have loved since childhood.

Here's another pic of the table:
