10/15mm Zombie Trolls - Help Please?!
« on: May 30, 2017, 08:01:00 AM »
Hi all,

I'm after a little bit of help tracking down some suitable models that I can use as Zombie Trolls in a 10mm scale army.

Some 28mm scale examples of the sort of thing I'm after:

I had considered getting some generic 15mm fantasy Zombies, but even then finding something suitable (i.e., that suits the scale and is about 18-20mm tall) has proven tricky for me. Ideally, they will be mounted in threes on 50mm x 25mm bases, and there would be a little bit of variety in the sculpts (say three or four variants?).

I'm therefore asking all the 15mm enthusiasts here on LAF to kindly assist me with their expertise and knowledge, with bonus points for the models being available in the UK. :)

Here's what I'm using as an inbred subterranean ogre for 15mm RPGs:

Might one of those (GW Hobbit plastic "goblin") fit the bill?

More here.

You know, I did in fact consider those, but I wasn't sure there'd be small enough, although the sizes that come in the kit vary a lot between the figures.
What scale are the barbarians in your picture, 15mm? If so, I fear the Goblins might be too big for 10mm.  :?

The barbarians are 15mm, as are the goblins behind the "ogre". But those goblins are just 11mm tall, so they're probably shorter than (e.g.) a Kallistra elf, albeit with much bigger heads.

It's hard to be sure, as I'm not terribly familiar with the Mantic figures, but I think that the GW goblin (compared with the Copplestone 15mm barbarian) is significantly smaller than the Mantic zombie trolls (compared with a 28mm human):

Or how about the Eureka 10mm ogres? I've been eyeing these up as use for some sort of Morlock-type creature in 15mm RPGs:

As an aside, I wonder if Eureka's 10mm "ogre beasts" are big enough to use as 15mm broo. They certainly look the part.

Hmm, the 10mm Eureka ones aren't a bad idea at all - they remind me of shorter Copplestone trolls, which is actually better for what I want. I suppose I could make them more undead with a few knife cuts here and there plus a suitable paint job. Pity I already placed an order with Eureka just yesterday, gah!  ;D

I was considering these 18mm Eureka trolls too, but I feared they'd be way too big again.

As for the Ogre Beasts, I think they are chunky 10mm rather than small 15mm; the fact that you get 24 (rather than 30) to a pack reinforces to me that they are intended to be a little sparser on a base rather then actually being much smaller than other 10mm troops. Pendraken's Taurians might suite you better if you're willing to trim the horns down a little?

///Edit:///

I've decided to go with the Eureka trolls, so thank you Hobgoblin for your help. :) I've emailed Ian at Fighting15s, and hope that he won't be too miffed at my changing things about with the order!

Glad to be of help! And thanks for your help with the ogre beasts. That's what I'd feared, given the price. I'll certainly have a look at the Taurians; I've been eyeing Pendraken's 10mm manticore for 15mm, on the basis that a conventionally sized 10mm manticore might give a lion-sized 15mm manticore. If my own 10mm experiment takes off, of course, then there's scope for experimental purchases without risk of waste ...

The thing with Pendraken is that they they are actually have thousands of models, but only dozens (maybe hundreds) of photos, so there is a big gap between what they put in their online store, and what they can actually sell you.

For example, some of their 10mm fantasy ranges actually have different styles and/or sizes, and where these are on the large side, they can work for smallish-15mm.

Now, I mention this because Pendraken used to do a range of "Beestmen", and the codes for these were as follows:

FBE1 (with sword and shield)
FBE2 (with spear)
FBE3 (with bow)

If you email Leon directly, and if you give him a steer on what you're after, he'll be able to help you out. The codes above should help get you started, and I'm sure he'd be able to confirm sizes for you if you need. :)

Thanks! I'll certainly investigate.

Many 10 and 15mm figures seem to have a fairly tangled lineage - the Kallistra, Pendraken and Minibits orcs all seem to spring from a common source, for example.
