16th Century chinese pirates?
« on: June 16, 2017, 07:39:14 PM »
Hello all

I need some help with this.
Do any of you know any manufacturer(s) who has suitable figures for chinese pirates for the 15th and 16th centuries?
I´m familiar with the foundry miniatures so thats my first port of call.
I also checked Nevermore thread about is chinese pirates and its also a good inspirational place. ;)

Cheers

Rui

EUREKA MINIATURES produces a range but in my opinion any chinese in civilian dress could pass as a pirate.
"The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is, where he came from. And if he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home. If he would not rather have stayed there ... in peace. War will make corpses of us all."

Forlorn Hope have a Wako Pirates range. Although primarily Japanese many of them would have been Chines or from other nations. Some of the figures are decidedly Japanese but others may work. Not as well sculpted or cast as we are used to these days but I have painted up a few of their Ming and they turn out OK.

A lot of boxer or tong figures would work as pirates too. Avoid any figures with 19th century fire arms or Manchu hats or tiger suits, but most others will work.

In their pirates range http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_126_170&sort=3a not sure what if anything would make them 16th century specific though!

There's plenty of options from existing ranges i.e. unarmored soldiers in plainclothes. I don't recommend using miniatures based on the late Qing as their clothing and headgear were heavily influenced by the Manchus.

Off the top of my head, unarmored figures from Assault Group's Tang and
Song as well as Curtey's Sung and pirates come to mind.

The Wokou and local garrisons from Taiping Kangwo Tu(Resisting the Japanese at Taiping) by in large used the same armaments e.g. the turban(futou/toujin) and the round collared robe(yuanlingpao). Some minor differences between the two forces are the inclusion of scarves, puttees(or lack of) and sleeveless clothing.

Perhaps Clibinarium's forthcoming 28mm Ming range will be of use.  ;)
