I am looking for a good red paint for my royalists of the Monmouth Rebellion, i have the GW paints but would like to know if someone can point me in the right direction with Foundry or Vallejo

I am a huge fan of the Foundry range, and would think that the British Redcoat 68A, B and C would be suitable. The A is the base colour, and you can vary the overall tone quite substantially depending upon how much of the B colour then applied. Nothing that can't be achieved with Vallejo, but I like Foundry because I don't have to worry about trying to mix and match shades between batches.

Think madder, or brick, red.

I'd go Vallejo 908 over 946, highlights in 909 or 829

If I recall the red wouldn't be the usual ref uniform of later years, but I might be wrong

The rules for pre-synthetic dyes are there are no rules ;)

Madder red was a common dye in the 17th century (and before and after), because madder is a common plant.

The final shade depends on many factors, including the mordant used and the material being dyed, but can vary from a bright orangey red to a deep burgundy. Colours will vary between batches. All will fade to lighter, duller hues over time.

All this was my first wife's field of expertise, I just picked up some stuff along the way. It has saved me endless agonising over 'correct' uniform colours over the years. :)

Quoted from Dave Imrie over on facebook "Effortless Red... Well not that Effortless but two colours. Memphiston red then mix Aldebaran red (Scale75) then Aldebaran itself." I have tried it and it is AMAZING!

Yep, I use that combination, although I usually include a middle step where I use blue, green or purple washes (GW) -depends on the final effect I want to achieve- to get a deeper color, then Aldebaran red. I use white basecoat, though. Effects will be different if using black or grey basecoats.

By the way, Scale75 colours are paints with a strong matt finish; also pigments are very fine, which means that they work best as lights or shades, rather than base colours; for base colours I have found GW particularly useful.

I just bought the Scale 75 green set; I haven't used them much yet but I will try this out.
