What a load of Hokún!
« on: July 09, 2017, 06:35:51 PM »

The Hokún are one of the Tékumel "bad guys", a race of crystalline aliens:

"The translucent, insect-like Hokún pretended to cooperate with mankind for a time, warred with him, enslaved him, ruled him as gods, and were eventually defeated by him. Sulking and filled with hate, the Hokún retreated to their great island in the southern seas, and no man (or any other of his allies) dares now to land upon those shores."

They ride larger versions of what appear to be the same species.

The above 3D sculpts are by David Allan Design (DAD). As with other DAD Tékumel figures they are typically printed in a white substance - plastic? polymer? (insert correct term here). The problem is that they are meant to be weird crystalline creatures and one can see their innards.

In an attempt to find a solution, David has given me permission to try Shapeways and get them printed in Transparent Acrylic which, assuming it works, should do the trick nicely.

I'm new to Tékumel, but have had a growing curiosity about the setting, as I've been reading more about it. So I feel bad for saying this, but I'm sorry, I'm having problems not seeing...

Neat idea!  The Translucent material from Shapeways might be just the ticket for these weirdos!  Tekumel has some of the best critter designs....

For my test prints I selected "Transparent Acrylic". Is there another option? I didn't notice a "translucent" version.

Unfortunately, on review of the files, Shapeways has cancelled the order as the wall thickness in some parts doesn't meet the requirement. IIRC, the issue is that the process uses a water jet for cleaning and the parts will be too fragile. Dave offered to thicken the parts but the resultant sculpts don't look anywhere near as nice as the originals - which are perfect, IMO.

So it's back the the drawing board!

That is it, I just can't keep the Shapeways material names straight.

Howard, you may want to have another go with 'Frosted Detail Plastic', it can do much finer detail than 'Transparent Acrylic'

Based on Joe's prompting I went back to Shapeways and double checked the materials analysis they had provided for the items. It  turns out that the "Frosted Detail" and "Frosted Extreme Detail" do actually "pass". So I've placed another order...

Will advise on progress as I get the information.

Looking forward to seeing them when they are completed.
