Mother Hydra spaceship interior - machinery 31/08 p5

Having supported the Crew of the Mother Hydra KS I thought it would be nice of me to provide them with a ride. My initial idea was for an entire spaceship, which could also be stored in a reasonably small box; but that didn't work out as the two requirements would have resulted in too small a ship to have an interesting interior. The alternative was to model the interior a la Space Hulk, but I did want something three dimensional. Enter the old scrapped and cut up pallet half I had found:



I intend to add further structural components to it, such as these unknown struts from some old shelving system (I think) seen lying over the pallet:



This is the view across the section of the Mother Hydra-to-be:



The open area I am planning to construct within the pallet is close to one of the many small thruster banks of the Mother Hydra. Here are the three thruster nozzles - plastic wine glasses with part of the stem sawn off (the complete wine glass with base attached is in the background):



The sawn off end goes into these:
 


These PVC plugs have to go into a bulkhead I am still designing.

The model has a particular challenge - as it's going to live in the cellar, I cannot use materials harmed by damp, so no wood or metal.

I have alvays a strong interest in scrap modeling projects, so nothing better than a space ship from pallet! I will follow your project with interest!

I've often played around with storage shelves for 'layered' ships, but that pallet tells me I've been too quick to write off the ones with complex cross supports.

I hope that it'll still be an eye-opener by the time I finish it.
The good thing about it is that it still is accessible, and I have to be careful not to clutter it up too much. If I want to restrict lines of sight or access I'll use scatter terrain - cargo, vehicles, a water tank with a humpback whale in it...
Up next: shopping for bulkheads.

Bulkheads and structural details were a main concern, so I did some shopping and dug up some Deathzone terrain sprues:



Electricity outlet boxes, old computer disc boxes (3.5" discs) and printed circuit boards + a couple of bits of computer interior which are perfect for doors. And a tin of Guinness as a storage tank, before I remembered I am avoiding metal - curses, I might have had to get a few more...



A possible transporter (also an old double fluorescent tube fitting...)

This is where they'll go - there will be a solid bulkhead behind the circuit boxes.



PVC cable conduit - to be used for corridors leading to open area:

(I found my old farmyard poultry set whilst looking for bits - these are around 45 years old!)

Some compartments in the pallet are too tight to get models in - these will be pipe and cable spaces - ideal as targets for sabotage/repair:



An old spaceship model will serve as a fluid tank for the thrusters

Interesting and ambitious build. I'll be following your progress with interest.

As a side note, I may be underestimating the harshness of the conditions in your cave, but I doubt it would lead to corrosion of an aluminium can. Unless the avoidance of any metal is a constraint you want to impose upon yourself. I feel you can safely use them as storage tanks and drink some more Guinness. Cheers!
