What models do you use for your warbands?
« on: August 06, 2017, 03:58:15 PM »
A friend of mine got me interested in frotgrave, one of the selling points he talked about was the lack of model restriction. This got me wondering, what do you guys use?
I was personally thinking of maybe starting a dwarven warband, however I'm still a bit lost in the shear amount of choice available on the internet.

I definitely take some of the dwarves available on the lead-adventure webstore, also the sources of fantasy minis topics don't make the choice any easier.

Short answer: use whatever the hell you like!
If you're spoiled for choice, then look at the troop types (weapons, armour etc) and base you purchases on that.

Yep - choose what you want!

Although if you're after a dwarves warband, I can recommend these...

Plenty of topics/posts on here showing what people are using.

I can recommend those dwarfs Grumpymoose posted, I got them via the KS and they're very characterful.
Though I've got these coming soon, so I'm now spoilt for choice! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/550360615/captain-redbeards-pirate-dwarves

I definitely do that, though there aren't that many dwarfs around with bows (though I could find a few).

I really love the look of them, I think I keep them in mind.

To be honest, Ive got about 5 gangs, and about 20 odd add ons. They are everything from mantic abyssal demons ,succubi ,shieldmaidens and odd ones from GW.
But the most adaptable ones are the Frosgrave ones.
The barbarians , the original soldiers ,and the cultists are all pretty much interchangeable with each other and give you an endless supply
of weapons. You can even get the gnoll arms and weapons to work.
At £20 for 20 soldiers you cant really go wrong.

How big are those Ral Partha dwarves? Really like the look of them but I've already got a ton of old GW and Reaper dwarves.

Arloid, I think we're living in the golden age for choice for minis right now. It is kind of hard to choose because there are so many good ones available. Northstar is making some dwarves that will be available soon I hope. But they're armoured. For human warbands you can't beat the Frostgrave boxes. Add in a box of Fireforge or Gripping beast minis for armoured bodies and your options are almost unlimited. Reaper has tons of character models and you can find a lot of specific types there (ie thief, warrior, wizard, etc) but they are more expensive than the plastics and tend to be larger sized but not always.

If you are going dwarves, I would go for these old Asgard range now produced by vikingforge
http://www.thevikingforge.net/25mm-fantasy-dwarves.html
Lots of character to the minis allowing for an individualised warband rather than just a wizard (which they have) with generic looking foot troops.

I have to agree, you can't go wrong with the frostgrave ones, though part of the fun in my opinion is going your own way and doing something unique with your warband. Though I probably pick them up along the line one way or the other.

I know right. There is just so much going with kickstarter and what not. I haven't thought of Reaper yet, thanks for the reminder and let's not forget making the choice even harder  ;) .

They are definitely not heroic scale so would mix well with Oldhammer Dwarves.

Hope this helps:

I've got a small handfull of dwarves I sorta intend to use as a dwarf warband eventually (they are in line behind the vampire and beastman bands... I am a wee bit distractable).

From Hasslefree I've got this nice 3-in-one kit, as well as a pair of nuddy ones for either special conversions or naked berserkers (haven't decided). They have a bunch of nice quasi realistic historical inspired ones, so I may well get more when/if the time comes.

From Heresy, I've got this dual-wielding miner bloke. Dunno how appropriate the weaponry is, but I'm sure I can handwave it as something else rules-wise.

My dwarf wizard is from Reaper. Like Hasslefree, Reaper has a lot of other nice dwarfs that I may add to the band eventually. As a bonus the squat and stocky nature of dwarf sculpts lends them better to the Bones material than other races/subjects, so there's a savings to be had there.

For my vampires, I'm using This figure as an apprentice, and this figure as a Captain. My initial plan was to use this figure as my Vampire wizard, but on receiving it, I discovered I REALLY underestimated how... Freudian this particular mini looks in person, LOL. Still debating whether to use it, and window shopping for possible alternatives.

Some other misc. vampire candidates (for my tastes):

This guy (the one on the left in the main pic, on the right in the clickable pics) would make a fantastic feral/solo vampire for use as a monster rather than a party member:
http://www.imbrianarts.com/undead/ghouls/index.html

For vampire troops/hirelings, I'm using Zombicide Back Plague zombies off ebay, intended to represent hypnotized/mind controlled thralls. I imagine that instead of hiring help, the vamps just roll up on a few of the more peripheral tents of the merc camps in the middle of the night and "disappear" some poor folks. The Zombicide figures are on the big side, but not as bad as I originally thought, or at least he zombies aren't.

For my Beastmen, pretty much any animal is fair game (as opposed the the GW "ungulates only, and horns = rank" thing, which while I understand from a visual recognition standpoint, I think is ironically pretty anti-chaotic), as is any combo of animal/human traits. I do prefer animal heads, and I tend to assume more beast = less clothes (so fair thee warned about nudity), but aside from those loose guidelines that I'm pretty open minded.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

IIRC Northstar are working on some plastic dwarves, which includes a bowman, so that might be worth checking out. Not sure when they are due for production.

Otherwise, as others have said many ranges are suitable depending on taste.
You can also pick up some old pre-slotta Citadel(GW) Dwarves with bows on e-bay (for a price Ugarte, for a price).

Due out imminently.  Got a sprue at Salute. Just as good as their plastic Frostgrave sets
