HDF vs MDF

I've been using laser cut MDF for buildings over the last few years and been happy with the result from multiple suppliers but I've seen that MaxMini http://maxmini.eu/terrain/fullcolor-industrial-terrain-set1 are using HDF as the material.

From what I can gather HDF is hardboard and I remember from woodworking class (many many many years ago) that this flaked at the edges and was hard to cut (pre-laser).

Can anyone enlighten me as to:

1) How this stacks up to MDF?
2) What the MaxMini sets are like in use - I've seen the page above and the video that links to but not seen any 'in the flesh'?

Ive seen a few suppliers put hdf instead of mdf when their products are actually mdf.

Hdf is just high density fibreboard, so it could be that companies are using both and its just harder to tell on thin sheets which material youre using.

Yeah, I think it's more a matter of vocabulary - I suspect the products are predominantly the same material (i.e. the norm seems to be 3mm MDF).  The only thing I have to watch out for is when companies use real wood.  I've found more warping/painting issues when companies use wood vs. MDF.  Some companies fail to disclose it and just say "laser cut", etc.
