Random 15mm Fantasy Terrain [Full Table: Oct 23]
« on: August 24, 2017, 02:35:42 AM »
In preparation for a small skirmish terrain set - really, while waiting for my ordered pieces to arrive - I've been cobbling together a few small pieces of terrain for the tabletop.  The first one is a simple 'lost temple' mounted on the classic CD base.  (Unpainted figure for scale.)

The columns are wooden dowels used to hold furniture pieces together - you can get a bag of ten at the hardware store for a couple bucks.  The ends are rounded, so to add stability, I mount them inside a small washer which looks like a column base.  The paving stones are simple matte board, and the rocks are from my garden.  It's not a particularly complicated or original piece, but it'll add a little something to the table.

Great stuff! I'd never thought about using those wooden furniture pegs in terrain... I'll have to see how they measure up in 28mm. Thank for the idea!

The green marble effect on the columns looks great!

You really can't go wrong with a nice simple ruin in a fantasy game, can you?

Thanks for the comments, guys.  I guess this is a good place to cross post my terrain project.  I painted up a resin graveyard from Monday Knight Productions that turned out to be a little smaller than expected, but will make for another nice piece of broken ground.

Couple of additions to the table this week.  This wizard's tower is made of three big corks bought from the craft shop, triangles snipped from an old credit card, and a wooden sphere glued to the top:

Here's a figure for scale, and a shot of the doors and gears used for a decorative touch:

I also made a few forests out of Toob Trees.  Rugged and cheap, and they take paint like champs:

A few more shots are up at the old blog-home: http://warinabox.blogspot.com/.

Best use for a debt card I've ever seen.  Very nice result :o

The trees look nice - I've seen lots of bits done with Toobs but the cost in the UK was horrible when I last looked.  The trees are £12 a tube now so the cost is heading in the right direction...

Thanks guys.  I don't know if these houses are going to turn out nearly as well.  I picked up some flat resin houses that you have to glue together, and they look a little rickety right now.  I'm hoping that it's nothing some paint and terrain can't cover up...

Stay tuned.

These are all from the same manufacturer, Total System Scenics QRF Line.  Specifically from the Renaissance Scenics line.  Flat resin pieces that you glue together.  Took some sanding and patching, but I guess they'll do for tabletop.  I wouldn't want to include any close-up photography in a pro product with them, though...

That last one is close enough, you can see the slightly misaligned roof peak and how the roof piece isn't quite long enough to cover the end piece.  Eh, it'll do.

Four new buildings for the table to show off here - first a couple of Kallistra pieces:

Plain old bridge

A lone tower keep on the hill

And an Alternative Armies tavern

And a church by...I can't remember where I found this thing:

Full table close-out.  Here's what this project looks like now that I've got everything all squared away.
Note that I didn't say this is what it looks like when it is done.  We all know projects like this are never done.  They just go dormant for a spell:

And one quick action shot of a game of SoBH:

Thanks for following along, guys!

Looks fantastic, very atmospheric!
The scenery really comes together as a town in 15mm.
