King Philips War - Did the colonists carry flags?
« on: October 17, 2017, 05:45:39 AM »
Im currently working on a new project, doing King Philip's War of 1675-76 in colonial New England. I am curious if the colonists ever carried flags in that conflict, I wouldn't be surprised if they did not bother but maybe someone out there knows more about it than me, wouldn't take much admittedly.

I'm going to do the project with 18mm Blue Moon figures utilizing Woodland Indians from their FIW range, I realize a later period but the Indians have muskets mostly and should be close enough. As for the colonists, I've decided on their ECW range even though again not quite the close match I'd like, beggars cant be choosers. I do not want to buy 25-28mm figs as they are beyond my budget and table size.

I'm a big fan of Blue Moon's stuff, having done a lot of projects with their various offerings. I did notice however they are having some scale creep. The new ECW figs are considerably bigger than their FIW figs even though both are in the same 18mm category. It doesnt put me off enough to not continue the project but I wouldn't mount the figs on same stands.

Anyhow I am leaning toward maybe a few flag carriers in this. Anyone know what they actually did?

I have 28mm KPW and in my research I have not come across any pictures or mention of flags.
Wargamers do it on a table.

I am just starting to research 17th c in North America and don’t have much yet to add.
The Osprey three volume series on Colonial American Troops 1610 - 1774 is useful and volume three has a section on flags. They have the same general form as English militia in the 1670’s.
Like you I think probably used for drill but possibly not carried in the field.

I visited Deerfield Village this summer.  In the museum and artwork they had on display regarding the Raid on Deerfield, there were no flags on display or in the paintings.  Most of those involved were militia and were not equipped and uniformed as traditional military.  When word spread of the raid surrounding towns and settlements sent what men they could spare in defense of Deerfield.

I agree. I think it is too early to be carrying flags into battle against native opponents in American history. Also, I wouldn't worry about the differences for your Indians in using F&I War troops either. They'll look great!

No flags is probably the safe bet.

At the start of the AWI (about a century later) Rebel militia from Bedford, Massachusetts, were carrying this flag, which is itself early 18th Century (because of the presence of Prussian Blue) but follows closely a design recorded for a troop of cavalry raised in the town in the mid-17th Century:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedford_Flag#/media/File:Bedford_Flag.png

I'm not suggesting that this flag was actually carried in KPW, but merely putting the idea out there that militia did have flags made for them around this time.

No plan survives first contact with the dice.

Everyone loves Flags. If you want flags who is to say you can't have them. No one knows for certain that they didn't have them.
