question about flashing steel by ganesha games
« on: 19 October 2017, 09:52:20 AM »
HI all,

I bought flashing steel this week, and have placed a sizeable pirate order with the chaps at black scorpion.

While reading through the rules i started wondering about the 'guardsmen' rule. Basically a figure with this special rule, basically dies whenever he loses a combat. Now i thought, would it give a great game when i give my regular 'mooks' the guardsmen rule, and keep my captains and first mates/officers as 'regular' characters. I am hoping this would give them a more heroic feel compared to the pirates/marines.

Anyone played like this before? And if so, does it give a good game, or are the 'main characters' too strong for the regulars?

It's a good set of rules, which works well for piratey stuff.
Yes, the guardsman rule will work for the rank and file chaps.
Even the best swordsman can be overwhelmed if enough enemies pile in; we tend to give shooters rank 1 (so only 1 combat action) and melee armed figures rank 2 (so two actions). Leaders are rank 4 or 5.
The combat system is good, although we use a house rule that a spare 'defend' action left over at the end of a combat can be used to disengage; this allows better characters to get out of combat (although they still might get charged again); without it we found everyone pinned in combats after the first couple of turns.

Thanks, I lok forward to trying them!

The rank1/2 etc.. Are those houseruled or did I miss it?

I have played SOBH and flying lead and enjoyed both, so I think these will be good for me too.
