54 cm worth of digger - a minor kitbash
« on: 25 October 2017, 08:50:29 AM »
I backed the last Mantic Deadzone KS and opted for the collection of digger vehicles. This included 3 short stubby ones and a fourth with an extension. I thought I liked the extended version, so went the whole hog and converted the lot into one single vehicle.
I might have overdone it - it's 54 cm long. Troops can practically cross a battlefield by walking through it.

It's going to be one of the collection of vehicles on board my Mother Hydra spaceship project; but it will also have its own darker history too, and this will be obvious from a logo which the crew of the ship never bothered to remove.
But that comes after the paint job, which at the moment is wavering between red and green, the latter being more likely.

It also needs some more construction work too, as you'll see in a future update.

Here's the beastie:

Dang; that's one impressive beast! 8)

I'm unfamiliar with the Deadzone stuff though; you mentioned walking through the thing, so does it have accessible interiors?
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

No, it does not. Figuratively, not literally, I'm afraid.

Just one word describes this.....

Coooorrrrrrrrreeeeee!

Something to really get your teeth into and take the bit between the teeth, and once you drill down I still don't know where I dredged up that awful pun from, honestly!
Warriors dreams, summer grasses, all that remains

Damn handsome; makes me look, again, at the long stalled M.O.L.E. conversion, though that was intended for a VSF.

Back on topic, are they resin or plastic?

[Edit] plastic from the website.

Plastic, with plasticard and some liquid greenstuff and a bottle of superglue too!
Mind you, it would have been easier and more elegant to get more of the extension bits and join them up - Mantic have the standard vehicle and the extension part, and I had 4 vehicles and one extension whilst on vehicle and 4 extensions would have made this far easier! But that was not on offer in the KS, and anyway it's only after I got them that the long digger idea came to mind.

More to come, an - uh - tiny detail to be added.

My idea was to take four units, take the boring mechanism off of two, and butt those open end to open end for a central piece, and then use two with screws on each end pointing out.

Seemed wise to have a backup, as well as a way to backup.

That's true.
I was going to do that but the tracks protrude beyond the edges of the cylindrical section.

Ah, wasn't obvious in the image, but I only added that as an alternative. Your digger, as I said, is 'Damn handsome!  :-*

Thank you  :D
Your suggestion is however viable too - a thick section of plasticard cut to fit the shape of the tubular sections could be used as an insert - probably 2mm would be enough to provide sufficient space between tracks.

The kit bash is an interesting idea - have you thought about adding some troop carrying sections?
