1:1200 Ancient Galleys - My Fleet is Finished.
« on: November 03, 2017, 09:29:14 AM »
I've been lured into the realm of ancient naval wargaming. The other guys at my club are using 1:1200 scale so I followed suit.
I wasn't aware how tiny these ships are - 30mm long and maybe 10mm wide. Tiny!
I thought that I'd start with a small fleet of triremes to supplement my ancient Greeks with plan to upgrade them to a Successor fleet.

Here are some pics and you can go to my blog to see more: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com.au/search/label/Naval
Hoping to get a game with them in a week or so.

Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

Always nice to see something different, keep it coming. Very nice paintjobs on these tiny ships. In case I've missed that bit; which rules are you going to use?

I've added a couple of new galleys to my growing fleet. This time half a dozen quinquereme and a hepteres (7).

Nice little fleet, there.

I purchased Osprey's 'Poseidon's Warriors' quite a while ago, as I intended to do something about that subject, too, but as with som many other plans, I haven't gotten around to do something about it, yet.

Well, my final wargaming act for 2018 was to finish my little Diadochi fleet. It comes in at 30 vessels and I don't think it's going to grow any larger any time soon.

They are quite cool! :-*

I always admire people who paint that scale - it requires a lot of patience and dedication - thumbs up!

These are nicely detailed and you've made a good job of painting them, the sails look particularly nice.

We used to have naval battles many years ago, in this scale,  using hexagon printed sheets as sea to provide movement and manoeuvring.

The rules were quite complex, Deikplus or something similar. What rules are you going to use?

I've only played Ad Mare Bellum so far but I also have Poseidon's Warriors. But I like the idea of hex-based movement. I use to play WWII naval games almost 40 years ago on hex sheets.

Good grief mate you must be almost as old as me ;)

Just looked out the rules - Diekplus - Newbury Rules published May 1979 written by Geoff Curran and the other ones I have are even older - Rules for Greek Naval Warfare - London Wargames Section written by Ed Smith they use an offset rectangular board that gives a similar movement to Hexagons. I think we only used these once but had quite a lot of games with the Diekplus Rules.

Rules for Greek Naval Warfare - they would never sell nowadays without some catchy reworking of the title. lol lol

Looking nice. I have been looking at some of the models lately, getting quite tempted.

Am I allowed to say oar-some?
