BSC 2018 LordOdo's House of Cards
« on: 05 January 2018, 10:40:18 PM »
Nothing as delicate as a house made of cards;
the smallest spark of fire, or the tiniest breeze of wind and the whole construction will be gone...
It would be ill-advised to live in such thing..

I'll be building a house, some might say a palace, the Queen of Hearts worthy.

"We're all mad here.." - Cheshire Cat

Oh and it might involve handcut brics, as that seems to be a thingy around here...

I guess it might be... I only realised I'll have to make every card myself, as otherwise I would break the 25% bought stuff rule extremely

Hang on - playing cards aren't bit of models are they? Otherwise you could argue that we'd have to find or steal (or poop?) 75% of the stuff we use - no plasticard, no sections, no filler, no glue (!)...

I'd have thought that if you are re-appropriating something that isn't intended for wargaming or modelling then that wouldn't count against the limit?

I look forward to seeing the scaled playing cards. ;)

I imagine it would drive someone crazy to paint an entire deck of them but it would make for a really fun "mad chef" sort of diorama where everything is bent out of shape and barely holding it's self together.

As said, I'll be making the cards involved in the build myself. So my first step in this project was looking up some reference material. For practical reasons I've decided not to include the mirroring in the cards of the Kings, Queens and Jacks. Besides that I think I'll go with a quite antique look for the cards.

I found some quite inspirational designs, and I'd like to share some with you:

Lastly, I found that while nowadays face (King, Queen, Jack) cards represent no one in particular, in the historical French practice each court card is said to represent a particular historical or mythological personage. As Wonderland, in which my House of Cards is set, is nor historical nor truly mythological but rather literary, I think I may represent figures from (major) literature on these cards.  Now I'm looking for suggestions, so if you have any, please share! :)

There are lots of 'Alice in Wonderland' themed playing cards

Literature themed sets are also available

I like my games like my orange juice: pulpy with no added sugar or artificial sweeteners

Thanks for the suggestions! As it stands now it will be as following:

Kings:
Hearts: Arthur
Diamonds: Peter Pevensie
Clovers: Macbeth
Spades: vacant

Queens:
Hearts: Queen of Hearts (not sure, as in the setting, she'd be real)
Diamonds: vacant
Clovers: Snow queen (Andersens, not the one by Lewis)
Spades: Queen of the Night (Mozart)

Jacks:
Hearts: Lancelot
Diamonds: Ivanhoe
Clovers: Robin Hood
Spades: Don Quixote (Or maybe the Knight from the Canterbury tales)

Please let me hear your ideas. As you may notice I went mostly with figures from British literature, which is on purpose; I'd like them all to be. Furthermore, I've been doubting to make Hamlet (or Lear) the King of Spades, though I guess that would the density of Shakespeare to high. Lastly, the Queen characters are all 'evil', I'd like them to be more 'neutral'.. Any suggestions?

What about Guinevere for one of the Queens as you already have Arthur and Lancelot? What about Falstaff instead of Don Quixote if you want to keep it rooted in British literature?

Bearing in mind the British theme, maybe Boudicca and/or Victoria or Elizabeth (the first) as options for the Queens?
