Looking for simple 15mm scale rules.
« on: 17 January 2018, 08:56:03 PM »
Hey all. I want to put together my own travel game box that will contain everything for at least 2 people to play. I'm thinking of going with 15mm for scale. I'd like suggestions for a rules that would work for 15mm in a play space no bigger then 2'x2'. It can be skirmish or big unit rules and any period.

Also it can be historical, fantasy, or sci-fy. Rules that focuses on vehicle, aircraft, ships of smaller scale are welcome too.

D.B.A. for Ancients/ Medieval
D.B.R. for Renaissance
You might even consider doing it in 10mm, lots of nice figures from the likes of Pendraken.

For skirmish I quite like the Osprey series of rules, wide variety there.

I'll look at D.B.A. thank you for the suggestion. 10mm is to small for my painting preference. Does Osprey offer much in the way of 15mm rules? I have some from them but they are all intended for 28mm.

Relicblade would be good for you,
So would ASoBaH or even mighty armies if you wanted to play with units.

never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

Lots of so called '28mm sets' would work great with 15mm figures on a smaller play area. Most rules have such compressed ground scales compared to figure scales that playing with smaller figures will generally help.

As you are putting together both sides - there is no need to worry about your figures matching with the most common scale a game is played in.

I was think SoBH, several of the Osprey sets would work well too, Lion or Dragon Rampant, Pikemans lament. Possibly TMWWBK but not sure it will play as well in a small area.

Yes just take a "28mm game" and use centimeters instead of inches.
Should play well on 2x2.

I'm gonna throw it in on the off chance you'll take it up. Age of sigmar skirmish.

Free unit profiles, cheap skirmish book, core rules are free.
All easily avaliable online.

Low model count and you already plat on a 3x3 for the 28m version so dropping it down is easy.

Late to the game, but I'll second fred's post, and raise it to the point that there's no such thing as a '28mm scale game'.
You can play any game with any size(scale) figures - to think otherwise is...well...not smart.

rambling...
Limiting yourself to a certain area (2' x 2') only restricts the scope of the battle - good scenario design will more than make up for any limit in gaming area.  Check out 'Astounding Tales' if a campaign style game is desired.  Folding cardstock buildings/terrain can increase your scenario options.  Consider off-table area movement of various elements (conducted on maps) to determine what (limited) forces may appear on the battlefield.

Good suggestions. I'll go back through some of the rules I already have and see of any will fit my needs.

Has anyone tried the rules that come with the micro armor from Game Craft Mini?

I seem to recall that Peter Pigs rules for Vikings suggest a standard base size, for 28mm put just one figure on it,
but for 15mm put several. This approach will allow you to 'swap' game scales. The idea of replacing inches with CMs
is a good one.

For skirmishes, I'd second the suggestion of Song of Blades and Heroes (or Mutants and Death Ray Guns for sci-fi). The Advanced SoBH book and MRDG are also small, so eminently portable. For 15mm, these games are explicitly designed for 2' x 2'.

I (very hastily) put together something very similar for last year's summer holiday. We used SoBH and also Ganesha Games' Battlesworn, which is an absolutely terrific set of rules - very different from anything else around, but a real "duel of minds" and great fun. It's also a small, slim portable book and again designed for a two-foot square in 15mm.

Might I suggest "round of fire" by one of our own forum members?

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=71748.0

Mostly focused on sci-fi, I'm not sure if it counts as simple since it does have a couple of complex mechanics, however, the game is written from the ground up to be playable with a grid instead of using a ruler, making smaller tables more feasible to use.
