Berlin Spartakists 1919 - help needed!
« on: April 26, 2009, 07:52:25 AM »
I am working on converting and painting a force of spartakists. My first problem is what flag they would use (if any). Would it just be a red flag? or should the hammer and sickle be added?

I also wonder if it would be possible to find miniatures that "look alike" some of the spartakist and Freikorps leaders:

Karl Noske (to the right) - tall big man in suit, hat and glasses

Rosa Luxemburg - rather short woman with long dress and hat

Karl Liebknecht - medium height, suit, hat and both seen with glasses and without

It should just be a red flag, for the most part; if you want to do something with a little more color, don't do the Hammer and Sickle; instead, use the Hammer and Plough. Though this was more a Russian symbol, I've seen it used enough in the early days of the Communist rise to suggest that it may have been used outside the former Russian Empire.

Artizan do some nice figures,  Mrs Marbles would do for Rosa, for instance.

Artizan have a new detective figure - Sgt Dawlish ? in long coat and hat, that would do nicely
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

No hammer and sickle! I think Stalin invented those in the early thirties, maybe late twenties in his war against the landowners.

You might try some Darkest Africa models from Foundry for a Rosa Luxemburg kind of woman (as her dress looks more the victorian age style than post WW I).

Thanks for your help!

the flag seems to be decided then. Red it will be.

Vistorian ladies seems to be a good bet. Apart from Foundry where can those be found?

Fastolfrus,

can you give me the link to the sgt? I cannot find him on the Artizan webpage.

He isn't there yet, I saw the preview picture on Artizan's Yahoo preview pages.
There are a batch of new figures coming along, mostly military types, but one police inspector and sergeant both in long coats and hats. The inspector looks ok for 1930s/40s but not sure from the pic if he would pass for 1919.

That's OK.

We try and keep an eye out for useful looking civilian figures for a variety of games.

The reason I don't use hammer & sickle symbols with my Spartakists is because the Spartakists were mainly council-communists and critical of the bolshevik revolution.
A red flag is good enough. I've never seen much pictures of spartakists with flags. I'm not sure if they even used them.
They did use armbands, as did most political groupings.

For Freikorps characters I use Copplestone's darkest africa colonial germans, painted feldgrau uniforms.

I think Brigade Games and Westwind do Victorian ladies too.
