Acronymns, Slang and Expressions
« on: April 29, 2009, 07:11:22 AM »
A newbie timidly asked me about the meaning of certain capital letter short names. The topic has been raised before so I thought I'd start a list here. Please help me add to it. Perhaps the Prof can make it sticky?

LAF - Lead Adventure Forum: this forum, initiated by Prof. Whichheimer and others
LPL - Lead Painters League: reoccuring painting competition in this forum
LAM - see entry under Companies.
BSC - Build Something Competition: a recurring creators challange run on the Workbench board.

Genres and Epochs
VSF - Victorian Science Fiction: Alternative history in in the time of Queen Victoria of the Britons and domains; inspiration is taken from Jules Verne, H.G Wells and the like; often synonymous with 'Steam punk'
WWWII: Weird World War II; occult and advanced technology WWII; lots of SS werewolves, walkers, zombies and such.
BoB- Back of Beyond: The term is more generally used to refer to any real or imagined remote region. It was first put into print by Sir Walter Scott in his novel The Antiquary, 1816:"You... whirled them to the back of beyont to look at the auld Roman camp.". In a wargaming context it has come to refer to the chaotic conditions in Central Asia (and by extension China and the Indian subcontinent) in the 1920s where White and Red Russians, British India, Chinese Warlords, scientific expeditions, Mongols, Turcomans, well, pretty much whatever force you want to throw in there, compete for power.
KKBB-Kiss-Kiss, Bang-Bang: According to Wikipedia,
Quote
[Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang] is a reference to Pauline Kael's 1968 book, which in turn was named after a translation of an Italian poster of a James Bond movie, which she called "perhaps the briefest statement imaginable of the basic appeal of the movies.
The name has been picked up by Mark Copplestone of Copplestone Castings and Mike Owen of Artizan as a moniker for their joint series of miniatures of 1960s /70s agents, villans and henchmen. The acronym KKBB has now become a title for any wargaming in a pulpy Cold War era, as inspired by films and TV series like James Bond, The Saint and even Dr Who. Se also 7TV
WotR May refer to either War of the Roses, as in the late Medieval English civil war lead, respectively, by the Houses of Lancaster and York
OR
the War of the Ring, which is in J.R.R Tolkien's fantasy world of Middle Earth, the period of strife towards the end of the the Third Age. The name is in a LotR wargaming context most often referring to the Games Workshop massed battle rule set.

Rule sets
T&T - Triumph & Tragedy; skirmish rule set with focus on 20th century gaming with an adventurous flair; also, but more archaically, an abbreviation of the RPG [wiki]Tunnels & Trolls[/wiki]
DH - Disposable Heroes
LtL - Larger than Life is a set of rules for pulp gaming from TwoHourWargames. The rules cover all kinds of pulp action, allowing for gritty tales of gumshoes, invading aliens and lost worlds.
.45 - short for .45 Adventures, a Pulp era game from Rattrap Productions using just a few miniatures on a relatively small game board.
DBA - De Bellis Antiquitatis, fast play set of rules for the hobby of historical miniature wargaming, particularly ancient and medieval wargaming. It is published by the Wargames Research Group
HotT - Hordes of the Things, a set of fast play miniatures rules for fantasy battles, published by the Wargames Research Group
LOTOW  - Legends Of The Old West, a Warhammer Historical ruleset, covering, you guessed it!, the Old West
LOTR - Lord of The Rings, which in this context means the set of skirmish level rules published by GW for gaming the mostly New Line film inspired franchise.
7TV - A set of rules and background materials from Crooked Dice based on classic sci-fi and action TV shows of the 60s and 70s.
EotD - Empire of the Dead: A set of skirmish leeveel rules, background materials and miniatures from West Wind, set in a victorian, Gothis Horror world.

Companies:

EE - Evil Empire, a name bestowed upon Games Workshop (GW) by more independent minded gamers.
EvilBay - nickname for Ebay, a place of brisk trade between many wargamers. Why it is evil it is not entirely clear.
GW - Games Workshop, very big wargaming company, with a huge, expensive catalog.
LAM - Lead Adventure Miniatures, Prof. Witchheimers miniature company.
WW - West Wind Productions, medium sized miniature company
HF - Hasslefree Miniatures, small miniature company
LAM - Lead Adventure Miniatures - a company Prof. Witchheimer has started as a spinoff from LAF, thus becoming a White Metal Baron.

TMP - The Miniatures Page, a quite big and sprawling forum for games, miniatures and more
PMT - see TMP

Other:

Dull coat - Specifically refers to Testor's spray-on matte lacquer, which is by many considered the superior of its kind. It is however generally used as a colloquial for any varnish or lacquer , brush-on or spray, used to protect and take the sheen off a painted miniature. Usage example

White Metal Barons- individuals turning their hobby into a industry, making huge profits*) from squeezing money for their obscure era products out of the niche starved gamer proletariat. Usage example

Pink Foam - is a sheet of [wiki]Extrude Polystyrene[/wiki] of variable size originally used as insulation. Among wargamers in is the preferred material in scenery projects. It is dense and solid yet light, carveable and relatively cheap and is therefore preferable to materials like wood or expanded polystyrene. It traditionally comes in a horrid pink colour, thus the name, but comes in a variety of colour. Therefore it is sometimes referred to as Blue Foam when it is green ... Sorry! Sorry! That would be blue!

XPS - see Pink Foam

White Metal - the metal, mostly alloys, used to cast wargaming miniatures. Used to contain quite a bit of lead but trends and environmental concerns now favours a higher proportion of tin, bismuth, zinc or what ever make sense given metal prices and the casting process.

Pink Foam Barons- individuals purchasing normal sized bales of sheets of pink foam from a DIYS stores, then cutting it to smaller portions and selling it over eBay at exorbitant prices to people not realising they can purchase it themselves at the same DIYS'.Usage example

Posting Troll - a person writing post which intentionally or unintentionally results in annoying several other forum members. In Vulgar English this is called a 'shit disturber' or 'shit stirrer', but perhaps the French word 'enmerdeur' (which sounds nicer than it is) captures it even better. One should strive not to be one. Usage example

Resin Nabob - a person building his or her wealth by sculpting and recasting objects in resin and selling them at huge profits to the less enterprising masses. See White Metal Baron.

Doing a JollyBob - see OOUI.

OOUI - Ordering Online Under the Influence, meaning purchasing or making bid on wargames related objects on the web while inebriated. Usage example

Lead pile - the back log of un- to half painted miniatures most wargamers have collected and lugs around through life. The same persons devotes much of their efforts trying to reduce this pile to a manageable size where one at least knows what's in it. This goal is often regarded as a sisyphusian task as many collectors see their piles replenished at a rate exceeding that which they manage to paint. Usage example

Workbench - everyone knows what a workbench is but miniature painter tend to refer to this area cluttered with paint pots , dirty water and half finished projects with a particular tone of fondness and almost reverence.  Usage example

Clever.  The old "deliberate mistake trick to see who is paying attention."   ;)

Reminds me a bit of PCMCIA=People cannot memorise computer industry acronyms.  :) But it is a good idea. Nothing worse than not understanding what the others are saying.

Maybe some usually abbreviated game rules should be added. Like

DH = Disposable Heroes

or

T&T = Triumph and Tragedy

Oh, apparently it's Trinidad and Tobago, not Triumph and Tragedy.

My mistake.

Warning

Do not surf the net looking for T n' A by mistake I promise you the results will not be what you are expecting (though they may be equally diverting).

Rattrap's 45 Adventure pulp rules are also often shortened to "45A".

(hadn't realized this sticky existed, very useful!)
