I do like the game I made. It allows for different missions, not just static defense, and has different unit types - in this case Agent types: Ronin, Razor, Splicer, and Sawbones.

I was asked to think of some other setting where the core ideas and mechanics could be applied,  and besides the already well-covered fantasy dungeon crawl setting, zombies or xenos, I was totally stumped. Hence the question.

Well, in that case, just about any setting could work with a bit of imagination, so just go with what you think is a cool period.

Because if you have the rules all ready, you could apply them from a Lost World/ Stone Age setting all the way to the grim darkness of the far future, and anything inbetween, with just minimal adjustments.

So, how about settings in/on/during:
- Homo Sapiens meets Homo Neanderthalis
- The Fall of Atlantis
- Rome
- Black Plague Europe
- The Sacking of Constantinople
- Eighty Year War
- The Boxer Rebellion
- Mogadishu
- Mars
- LV-426
- The Dark Age of Technology
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Thanks. Changing the flavor certainly works and those are all excellent suggestions. I'm leaning toward Archeologists against Mummies, or some similar ME-spiced Crypt Crawl.

My own gaming group long ago settled on using the World of Darkness rules as a basis for all our RPG games exclusively.

We've used it for any setting, from a lost World campaign, to medieval, pulp, superhero, generic Scifi and even (the current one) Star Wars campaigns. We only use slightly altered rules for each campaign, tailored to each setting, at the residing DM's discretion.

But the same can obviously go for tabletop miniature rules as well... :)

There are defintely some settings from history that are mostly already mentioned here. There is an excellent Rorke's Drift game written exactly for such a purpose. The battle for Saragarhi outpost in 1897 is a spectacular example of such a battle.

The last battle of Roland against the Moors would be an excellent game and could provide for a running battle.

The fight of the US Marines against the natives of Innsmouth in 1931....?

A small number of Limitanei in an outpost on the German border in the last days of the Roman Empire. Or a unit of Varus' Legions escaping from the Teutoburger Forest?

I believe Lord of the Rings was already mentioned and from this one could draw more great game ideas like the escape by some Elves from doomed Gondolin of the end of Balin in Moria.

Never heard of World of Darkness. Then again, I'm not much of an RPG-er. Is it simple or more crunchy? Does it translate to table top miniatures easily? I'm always on the lookout for hybrid rules that smoothly combines rpg elements with tactical table top skirmish. I had yet another idea rattling around in my head for an rpg-lite -  but there's no sense reinventing the wheel if someone has already done it better and more thoroughly.

I think the exotic, niche settings would be fascinating if someone has the in-depth knowledge to bake in the authenticating details with the basic mechanics. But I'm afraid I don't.

How's about the fall of Acre in Outremer? You could have heavily armoured religious order knights trying to battle their way out of the city before it is overrun by Saracens. You could award points based on what can be saved - religious artifacts, important loot/documents, high ranking nobles, women and children, etc.., not to mention the players' own lives! Imagine them trying to negotiate their way through twisting alleys or choked main thoroughfares, trying to avoid panicked crowds or attacking warriors.
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

Basically, it's the rule set used by White Wolf for their range of RPG games. You may have heard of Vampire: the Dark Age or Werewolf for instance.

It's a D10 based system, more focussed on story telling, and not on bookkeeping, like D&D. So no noting down each and every item in the inventory; it is assumed that a party is savvy enough to bring ample torches/candles/lamps when venturing down a dungeon for instance.

We often resolve combat using miniatures (depending on DM preference), and a variety of rules are used to tie in with the system, which is fairly easy to do, as the original rules are flexible. So we have used simplified X-Wing rules for space combat, I made a pulpy car combat rule set based on an article in WSS, and one of our group has ventured penning down and streamlining the generally accepted combat house-rules we've grown used to over the years (although he still hasn't finished that set ::) ).

I think it would lend itself particularly well to mating with Infinity's D10 system, but never got around to blending those (and now there's an Infinity RPG system out there anyway).

So all in all, the system is remarkably versatile, mostly due to the fact that it is story-based and not rules-based, with many situations resolved at the DM's discretion.

Here is something that some may consider insensitive (perhaps a little 'too soon') but... the players could be either the fleeing soldiers or the attackers in a scenario based on The Highway of Death.
