Simple Mecha Rules?
« on: 05 October 2018, 10:24:35 AM »
I am a dimwit. I like to sit back, roll dice and relax when playing games, not have my brain boil out with a billion options or rules to remember or charts to check (to wound/hit charts are a relic of the past). With all this in mind I'd like some suggestions for generic Mecha rules.

A constant I tend to find is they OD on crunchy stuff to immitate Battletech which makes me sad.

maybe these?

Don't own them, but own many ganesha titels and they are simple and straightforward. Since they are based on the song of blades and heroes engine (SOBH), i hae a feeling these would be simple as well.

i found this battle report:

I have played many games of Ganesha's Mighty Monsters (MM).  Giant monsters vs. Mechs.  I have also played Horizon Wars (HW), both are very good games.  MM is more of skirmish game with two or three monsters on a side whereas HW we regularly play with 6-8 mechs aside plus support of ground units.

I found MM more intuitive to learn, but I then have played lots of their games before.  Horizon Wars took a few plays to get in my head but once learnt flowed well.

You might want to take a look at BattleTech Alpha Strike.  It's the streamlining that BT really needed back in the 90s.  Works for very fast play with anywhere from lance v. lance, to company v. company, and even bigger engagements for multiple players.

Something that handles Kaiju, Mecha and ground troops (tanks, planes etc) would be great, anything fast-playing in that vein?

One of the Forum guys (Elbows) had a great system in development - Elbow tech - That he has dropped, unfortunately! I would love to see him develop it in a generic sense (Come on Elbows) I have played the elbow tech game as he put it out there early on and you can find my battle reports here on the forum. A simple fast and fun version of battle tech, unfortunately, he took down the links to his rules and cards. Resurrect this in some version Elbows.  :D :D :D :D

If you want anime-inspired miniatures rules for mecha, I would contend that the old Flagship Games Mecha! game is still unmatched.  Long OOP but Scale Creep's still got them (and the entertaining but non-vital Spirit Warrior Empire supplement) on sale - cheap, too.  Do NOT believe the ad pitch at the link, the game is NOT solely about Aztec mecha (although the Aztec SWE setting is touched on in the core book) and does more conventional anime mecha just fine.  Excellent and innovatiove set of scenarios in the core game as well, very good idea mine for other games.

A question after my own heart, and a few answers I didn't know yet!

There is also GunFrame from  www.PerilPlanet.com, haven't gotten round to buying or playing it myself though!

If you like Goalsystem games there's my unfinished, and officially unreleased RoboFire game. I've been ignoring it the last four years, but I may make a push to get it done in 2019.

Anyway, here's links to the rules, and to cards designed by the talented Jaye Wiley.

Let me know if you have any questions, and good luck in your search!

P.S. The rules do not currently support Kaiju V. Mecha play. They're strictly for mecha and mixed unit battles.
