The gatehouse is changing quite rapidly now and taking on a more realistic appearance. Once the basic build has been completed, I can fill/cover any cracks and then begin the laborious but fun process of adding surface detail.

One of the approach ramps finally gets an undercoat. Some lowlights to do with ink once the bridge is glued in place, some fine detailing work, and some more drybrushing after that before this section at least is complete

The bridge gets buttresses on one side and that 'lived in look' from multiple artillery strikes and other battle damage

Flanking the bridge will be baseboards with flooring, steps, ruins etc. in low relief onto which rubble and ruined buildings can be placed.

One base which has reached the undercoat stage with alleyways, drains, floors etc. using a number of different surfaces from flagstones, cobbles, and tiles in different patterns and arrangements.

Each baseboard starts life as a simple concept - in this case an aisled building with a bell tower - the footprint for a future ruin model is mapped out and the surrounding ground laid out

To create the impression of height in low relief steps with a slight backwards slant are used. Every scrap of foam left over from other building projects can be used in this way...

Not to disappoint, further progress has been made to stonework and the undercoat to the water effect on the baseboard

Sentries survey the damage

And finishing decorative effects to both approaches - the tree of Gondor applied in the same way as the stonework with a pencil to create a low relief effect which (hopefully) will stand out with dry brushing

Getting better and better all the time.
The "white tree" motifs on the pillars are great - definitely a technique to copy!

Also, I love your proxy Gondorean figures  :)
