Freikorps 1919-1920s
« on: March 07, 2007, 11:07:19 AM »
Apart from Cannon Fodder, does anyone make 28mm suitable for the various revolutions taking place in Germany/Austria etc just after the First war?  I have mentioned in another post the lack of German police. What about revolutionaries and Freikorps? Would late WW2 sturmtroopers do for Freikorps? Who make a reasonable range?

regards

Bob

WW1 of course. And yes, I think they'd do good.
"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
"Uh, I better look in the manual... This book must be out of date. I don't see "Prussia", "Siam" or "autogyro"...

Did you mean WWI? The look was similar - though they often had those helmets meant for Turkish export, with the brims filed off.

Damn, should proof read before posting! Of course I meant WW1!!!
Are there any ranges out there that have that battle weary look. Not the precisely outfitted sturmtroopers with the regulation  number of water bottles etc. I am after something a bit more non-regimental to reflect the 1919/1920s look.

Brigade Games is releasing new packs for their "Storm in the East" range. These include some Russian storm troopers with Adrian helmets and rifles. The Adrian was pretty common after the war. Maybe you could mix some of these in.

Would some of the Anglian Miniatures SCW figures do for Frei corps and some of the other combatants?

I´ve thought about it, but the Spanish uniforms are rather peculiar - I´d go for a mix of Brigade Games and Copplestone Late War Germans for the Freikorps, and the Anglian Republican Militia, although you´d have to replace pretty much all the heads with more "german" headgear, mainly "Schiebermützen" instead of berets.

I've got an order coming in from Brigade through Northstar to do just that.
For Freikorps: stormtroopers and some trenchfighters

For Spartakists and Ruhr Armee etc.  I'll do german sailors (painted with red armbands), slightly converted german askaris with  shapeless hats (painted caucasian or with headswaps), and german stormtroopers but with headswaps of what I've lying around.

Copplestone Russian Partisans should be good for at least five spartakists, if you take away the too typical russians.
His German Mercenaries and DA german officers should be very good for freikorps, with some conversion options for middleclass revoutionaries.

Waht's missing still, in this quality, are soldiers with caps and longcoats, and post war armed civilians in suits and fedora and other hats.
I'm considering early war germans in caps by Renegade. Same sculptor as the Brigade ones.

Cannon fodder are really sweet, judging from the pics, but could look rather crude next to Brigade.

For Freikorps in Adrian helmets (of which existed at least one korps) Copplestone or Brigade Turks could do. The turkish uniform apparently was very inspired by the german uniform, and quite some helmets produced in Germany for Turkey ended up in post-war Freikorps.

Hello, by the way (first post)

Sure on this? The late War germans are really different in style, and AFAIK most of the WW1 stuff from brigade is done by Mike Owen (Artizan)

I'm quite sure. Mike Owen worked for Renegade right after quitting Foundry, but also some other folks. I think he did most of the early WW1 stuff.
All the newer stuff, like the late war germans and austrians are done by Kevin Adams.

I should check 2004 WI adverts.

Here be good pictures of Freikorps (but also many dead links):

Interesting, didn't knew that.

Back on topic: I think several of the Fundry Old West range (Old Range) would be rather good, there are several workers and suit wearers with shotguns around. They might be a bit on the small side, though.

You might even try some of the Tombstone Westerners from Black Scorpion. These are larger, and the Shotgun/Bowler guys will do. Of course you'll have to get rid of the holsters

reviving an a old topic, but I was wondering with the surge in interst with  1920-30s gameing, such as SCW, IWI, and ECW3. If any one would be intested in doing the Frikorps? I am thinking Anglian, musketeer or maby even Gripping beast might be up to the task considering they are makeing lots of thouse ranges anyways.
The post WW1 conflects have always been intesting to me and this era is one i would love to game, there just donst seem to be that many approprat models for "German" workers militias, Spartakists or even the Red Ruhr Armee.
I know I can find planty of mins to reprasent the war in eastern boltic with RCW figuers, I guess I am just looking for a good'ol street fight.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Do not forget the "Irish Flying Column" by Musketeer Miniatures - they suit nearly perfect for German Workers Militias. As well as the Westwind Berlin or Bust "Volkssturm" should do (I couldn't get my hands on them till now). Some french Resistance will also be suitable.

For Freikorps also use the germen WWI Troops with "light equipemt" by North Star to get some Freikorps without granades.

Anyway, most miniatures for Workers Militia need some conversion - remove head / hat and give them some workers caps. For the BoB Copplestone Russian Partisans have a look at what I have done:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=4828.msg52591#msg52591

As well as have a look at area23s minis - thoese are really got to see some "easy done - big effect"-conversions.

Oh and please show pics when you've done some minis.
