Mordheim
« on: 11 August 2019, 06:30:24 PM »
What better way to celebrate the release of Warcry than to build and paint another Mordheim warband...

Here's my Carnival of Chaos warband built from some spare 40k cultists and other bits.

First of all the Carnival Master and his two Brutes. Carnival Master is a cultist leader with new head and left arm. The Brutes are cultist heavies minus their backpacks, with new heads and new weapons. Heads and weapons from the Putrid Blightkings.

Two Plaguebearers.

A horde of Nurglings. Lovely character and sense of fun to these models.

Three Brethren. Again chaos cultists with minor conversions to arms and weaponry.

And finally the highlight of the warband as far as I am concerned, two Tainted Ones. Very happy with how these turned out. They're both classic Jes Goodwin 80's metal sculpts and they really hold up well today. So much character and detail on the models and both so individual. Strong Nurgle aesthetic on both and I like to think I've done them justice with the paintjobs.

On a side note I originally varnished them with AK Interactive Ultra Matte varnish. I have been using Vallejo Polyurethane Matte for years and thought I'd give the AK a go as the Vallejo is a bit on the satin side of matte. Anyway the AK is very very very matte and I didn't like it at all. Sprayed over with my usual Vallejo and decided I like the slight satin look a lot better.

A most creepy and disgusting warband... well done!  Keep them away from my Reiklanders, please.

Still love Mordheim, after all these years.

Your painting has come out really clear and bright! I love how the green helmets on the brutes look especially! How did you manage it?

Thanks. The helmets are base coated Coat D'arms Goblin Green followed by a gentle wash of GW Athonian Camoshade pulling it down as you apply. This really brings the green to life. Then a simple edge highlight of GW Ogryn Camo on the sharp edges. Quite simple really. It's the same colours as the green armour except that there are a few layers in between base and final edge highlight.

Very nice! Those Tainted Ones look superb. I also really like the chaos cultist conversions: brings them very nicely into the Old World.

My warband off the painting table, the Cult of the Possessed.

First up leading the warband is the Magister. A metal Chaos Sorcerer model by Citadel. Apparently it was available at some event or other. His right hand was originally a fist with a big ring on it. That got removed for an appropriate weapon. He's a lovely model with an extra set of arms sprouting from his torso, one of which is turning into a tentacle.

The two original metal Possessed models. Very heavy and unbalanced models. I pinned all the joints to prevent them falling over and breaking mid-game.

Three modern plastic Beastmen.

Now for the Cultists. These are based on the Frostgrave Cultist bodies with replacement resin heads by Tabletop Arts, the original heads were a bit small I think.
Four Cultists with spears and shields. Bitsbox arms with Skaven spears. Shield are the drum from the GW Zombies. Love the faces stretched over them.

Three cultist with bows.

Four Darksouls with axes. I was very unsure about what to use for these models. In the game they are stronger then the average Cultists but have a lower weapon skill. The original metal models although nice, have double handed weapons. This is far from ideal considering thier profile. Decided to use the modern Chaos Marauder models for the Darksouls and although I'm not 100% happy with the model choice I've got no better ideas so they're staying! Again heads swapped with the resin Tabletop Arts ones.

Now the minor heroes of the warband, the Mutants.
Same as the Cultists, Frostgrave Cultist bodies with Tabletop Arts resin heads. Mutations from the bitsbox.
Mutant with an extra arm and Mutant with a tentacle arm.

Mutant with spines, Mutant with scorpion tail and Mutant with a claw.

Lovely mix of old and new models. You have kept the look and feel of the original warbands which is great.

I've re-photographed my Undead warband as my old post got lost when Photobucket started charging.

Vampire and Doom Wolf. Both original Mordheim metal models.

Three Dregs. Two original Mordheim metals with bitsbox arms and a converted Ral Partha thug.

Necromancer converted from a Ral Partha mage and a Ghoul to use when 'this lad's got talent' is rolled.

Six modern plastic ghouls

Seven Zombies. Metal models from The Assault Group. They really fit in.

I've also made some Wyrdstone tokens/markers. The actual stone is made from some green glass pieces I bought from Ebay. Bases with added interest.

Some treasure chests I bought.

And finally whist I was in the mood I made some general fantasy objectives/treasures again made from all sorts of bit and bobs that have been collected over time.

Very nice treasure markers! I have been thinking of doing something similar with various contents of my bits box. Should provide an opportunity to use all those odd parts that never look suitable on any model.

As for wyrdstone (warpstone), I was under the impression that the native material (as e.g. found in the comet that hit Mordheim) is actually black in colour, while the refined version (manufactured by the Skaven) glows with green or purple shade.

These are all quite amazing! And delicious painting. (Wish I had known about those extra-long hood heads!)
