Finding a use for small trees
« on: November 29, 2019, 11:38:55 PM »
I have a bunch of smallish trees (100mm or shorter) that I bought in bulk on eBay several years ago. I now prefer using much larger trees and I've been wondering if I can find any use for these smaller trees. While refreshing the foliage on my larger trees I had a few ideas of how I could improve the smaller trees and incorporate them into some new terrain. I'm really pleased to give these trees a new life while adding to my terrain collection. More details and pictures here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2019/11/finding-use-for-little-trees.html

These were the mix of tree types:

The tallest of those I used for stretches of roadside trees (the Firefly is 1/72):

The others I used to incorporate into a new set of rural hedgerows that could also work as bocage (miniatures in the picture are 20mm):

Very nice TP. I would say at the common gamer level there is a trend for bigger more realistic trees nowadays. Two years ago I spent £100 on a load of HO scale trees of the railway scenics sort.  They were the first bit of wargaming terrain I had ever done. I put them on bases and at the time I thought they were the bees knees, I didn't think it mattered they were a wee bit short for 28mm figures. However, all my mates have moved on and invested in larger trees.  :'(
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

figures bought: 500+
figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

Very nicely done- good use of those trees. I have done the same with some short-ish Woodland Scenics trees.

Would you be able to tell me what you used to base the trees and bocage? Would be very helpful!

The bases are strips cut from MDF. I use a Dremel with the sanding attachment to bevel the edges and rough them up a bit. The small earth mound is carved from insulating foam and then textured with normal household filler. This is then textured by sprinkling sand and small stones over a layer of PVA glue. Once dry it's painted. I hope that helps.

That avenue looks super.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

You’ve done really well with these. Just shows how they can be incorporated into some very fine terrain pieces. You should be proud of yourself. Well done.
