Well like I had mentioned, send a robot crew with building printing system and other equipment ahead of the colony, would increase the Colony's survivability. Drilling water wells, installing sanitation systems, printing buildings, laying underground electrical systems and any other additional builds needed. In addition the printing system can install a perimeter wall system from hazardous alien creatures as well, everything would look like adobe buildings and walls.  When the Colonist arrive then things like the prefabs then be used for shops or other type of buildings, and allow the colonist to just move right in and start planting crops right off.

So center of the colony could look like adobe and the outer edges could look like prefabs and shipping containers.

Well, I use a whole slew of different styles, chalking up some to the colonists' romantic view of pre-spaceflight Earth.

I've got wooden houses, brick buildings, ferrocrete prefabs, colony buildings built from shipping containers and sheet metal...

15mm scenery is incredibly easy to build and doesn't take too much space to store.

I think it depends on whether you are talking a small settlement, or a vast city. If it is the vanguard of a discovery/colony fleet then I think most of the buildings would be things that they could drop from space. Containers and such. The longer a settlement is there, then I think you would start to see native materials being used. It would almost always be cheaper to use materials on hand than to constantly import raw material. Bring in the equipment, sure, but not the building blocks themselves.

That’s my take on it. The first buildings are basically the equivalent of construction site office trailers. Simple, modular, easily hauled by a heavy lift aircraft. Next are buildings that can be created simply with materials on site with a minimum of processing. Log cabins, adobe huts, etc.

Once the site has sufficient population, you will start seeing dressed stone, cut lumber, rebarred concrete, and other materials that require an industrial base to produce.

Our Infinity games are set in Africa where a big alien spaceship crashed into the earth and they made a quarantine zone around it with a set up sort of like Germany after WWII.

So I use a lot of my red -roof and adobe buildings with the modernization kit from The Miniature Building Authority in my games.

Someday I'd love to have a whole urban table set up for Infinity, but it looks like that might not happen in my lifetime at this point.  We'll see.  I think I'm going to have to just have an entire building for gaming stuff before that happens.

That's a great setup.

My 'old' buildings are North African/Arabian inspired, so Adobe, mud brick & stone.

The backstory is that the original colonists came from a Middle Eastern environment. They arrived on the planet Harmony in a colony ship, which then underwent a catastrophic landing accident while only partially unloaded. The lower grade workers with basic equipment and tools had already reached the ground but the disaster destroyed the heavy equipment, construction plant and the architects/scientists/engineers/leadership perished in the event. The survivors (later called the 'Old Colonists') fell back on the available resources, knowledge and basic tools to build 'North African' style buildings.

As other colonists arrived later, the building styles changed over time but many retained that flavour.

Fantastic setup!!!  I can also imagine a lot of impromptu “buildings” growing out of the alien/spaceship wreckage, almost like a living junkyard.

Nice idea Dan, Wouldn't one plan the colony ship as to being the main habitat for the colonist in the first place rather then having them to build a colony at first land fall.

So the colony ship lands, from within it drills a water well, then a geothermal heating and cooling well to save power on the ship, then they erect solar panels and wind turbines, really everything they need for general living would be on the ship. Farming equipment and construction equipment could be in the storage holds, the storage holds could then be used for addition living space for the colonist and crew.

This has me thinking of a nice project for later, I'll have to put on paper before I forget.

Have you watched The 100?

For that matter, have you seen first series of the Expanse? Not sure I would like to land the Nauvoo (see Colony Drop).

In terms of science fiction, if it's a big enough galaxy, anything can be justified lol

regarding 3d printing, NASA had a competition a couple of years back - link with some interesting ideas - link

Image links seem to be on this page. I'm not sure why, but NASA seems determined to make its site as unhelpful as possible when looking for stuff :(

Mantic do some prefab scenery for their Warpath range - link. I think it's gone up since I bought some. It's quite nice, but a pain (sometimes literally) to put together.

Tents!  Lightweight to carry.....versatile for any colonist ( and the odd prefab)

Front view.  Pringle tubes, string and wet pva infused tissue plus a few bits from the bits box to represent airlock / environmental atmospheric scrubbing etc.  I got carried away with the casting once I made a mould....

Adobe shanties.
Mostly scratch built, cardboard. Needing to make more walls, which I'm working on.
