Are the playing card sets generic with the exception of the theme / backs?
Ie can the sets be used for all genres or are there differences between eras.

Not generic. Each set has the Special effects of each Special card on them. In the original Old West rules the 7 and 2 cards are different from the rest of eras.

It would have to be super generic to work with Core. In which case just use a regular deck of cards.
