What figures fit with the Darkson AE figures?
« on: July 18, 2009, 06:38:27 PM »
What figures fit with the Darkson AE figures? I have Artizan WW2 and Thrilling tales figures and my friend and opponent just bought a number of Darkson AE Americans. Are there any other figures that will “look right” next to the Darkson figures?

Depends on how fussy you are about scale. The AE-WWII figs are "true 28" scale and they have very realistic human proportions. Most other manufacturers don't

I have a pile of painted Artizan WWII and Thrilling Tales minis that I use with the AE-WWII figs and I don't really notice the difference while we are playing. I'm not all that fussy about scale though.

We seem to be "fussier" about scale comparisons. The heads and body width of the Artizans are noticeably bigger with the Thrilling tales figures and my late war Germans. Some of my Artizan SAS commandos are ok with the Darksons.

I know some people use the tamiya 1/48 plastic figures with them. They are on the small side for 1/48.

Ebob miniatures are slender and more realistically proportioned too and might work.

Seconded on the Tamiya, I have some US GIs with my American AE forces (alas, gaming stuff is all packed up ready to move house or I'd snap a comparison pic - they're a little larger, but not too bad)

Thanks for the tip on the Tamiya figures guys. Comparison figures would have been great. How about Shadow Forge characters or Hasselfree characters? Do they look go against them?

I'm guessing the hasslefree might look okay, they aren't as bulky as most 28mm.

As for a comparison with the Tamiya ones, search the AE-WW2 forum, I've seen people post pics of them there.

Don't Victory Force do some AE WWII that are nominally 1/48? I'm sure somebody on here posted a load of pics of games with them and they looked pretty good - was it Kampfgruppe Cotterel?

Yeah, but they won't work at all. Way too big (and bulky).

The only reason the Tamiya are close is because they are in fact too small to be real 1/48. :)

I found this scale info on the VF page:
http://www.victoryforce.com/victoryaboutvfmpage.html
maybe this gives some useful impression about their size.

More scale comparison pics:

Page two has a group shot with VFM; they seem to be a bit tall. I doubt it'd be noticeable, with some creative basing.

IMHO, Artizan works just fine.

well, the newer artizan work ok, it's the older artizan that are more of a problem.

I'm not sure which figures you are reffering to. The Thrilling Tales line?

No, it's not that easy. The earlier WW2 releases (DAK etc...) are bigger and bulkier than the later WWII and Thrilling tales releases. The problem is I can't tell you exactly when the switch occurred. My guess is it must be around the time they started sharing equipment bits with BAM insteas of Crusader.
