Makes sense.
You should give kickstarter a go. I started with a basic wizard's tower I made for Sellswords and Spellslingers and moved on from there. As a hobby business I'm adding an extra 2/3 of my salary income just from tinkering around at nights and weekends with something I would likely be doing anyway (to a lesser degree though)

Can the printer sit on a desk in my office or does it need a room with outside ventilation?

Roughly what's the filament cost to print a "normal" 18 x 18 x 18cm building?

Thanks much as I'm seriously considering buying a printer.

You shouldn't need ventilation if you are printing PLA. ABS would possibly need ventilation but just go PLA plastic. I buy filamnet for about $NZ30 a kg. The 18x18x18 building is a bit tricky as there are a huge amount of factors involved in that in regards to wall thickness interior walls, etc, but I would say maybe around 300g to 600g? The image below is about 600g but the dimensions are about 210x210x120 that is without supports (this one is modular so would usually be printed in sections).

I have my printer on a table in a room, ventilation is not key if using PLA (which I use). If you have a draft caused by ventilation it could cause the corners to lift (as i have found out).

As Beefcake said there is a lot of different things that effect how much filament is used, supports, wall thickness, detailing etc and what layer size and infill % you use.

once you get the hang of it all it becomes fairly easy to use.

As for costing of PLA thats depends on what type etc you use. You are able to buy cheap PLA but sometimes it doesn't print well and may causes clogs etc.

After speaking to my Dad over the phone and WhatsApp video, he was telling me about how is King Arthur Game was coming along nicely and that he found an old Airfix Roman fort. Sadly this old fort had seen some better days, some parts where missing and more importantly it was the wrong scale for his game.

So I thought I would help him out, after sitting down and reading about the Roman Mile Forts online and in books I come up with the plan of a small(ish) fort with two gates, one being a tower entrance and other just a normal gated entrance.

I designed a few different stone work for the fort and my old man picked the one that he liked and thought would look best for his games (and more useable in different periods or something knowing him).

anyway here is what my Dad received this weekend as something to keep him going over this lockdown period.

The gates are printed separately so they can be open or closed depending on what is happening in the fort.

It is a brilliant model. As soon as I can get it sprayed with undercoat and finished I'll put some pictures on here.

So during COVID lockdowns I have not been near my printer sadly, however this has changed due to work recalling me.

I was asked to design and print a Train Station for someone, this is the project in the design phase and since these photos where taken I have done some work to the roof sections and added on some ramps at either end.

Stay tuned for photos of the project printed in 20mm (the scale that the guy was after).
