Latvia 1919
« on: August 02, 2009, 08:51:44 AM »
I'm very interested in wargaming Latvia 1919 and will be doing this in both 28mm and 10mm.  I've managed to get some great information from the 'Pigmy Wars' site.  However, are there any other books or material which relates to this action?  I'm also looking about for vehicles (for my 28's) in 1:48 that would cover this particular period as well....any advice or pointers will be much appreciated.
Sorry, I had initially placed this topic in WW1  :-[

Naturally there is loads more material Tannenburg, but not in English. You need to know German, Russian, Estonian or Latvian.

Are you looking for anything in particular?

Vehicles are tricky. Almost all the vehicles (including the armoured trains) were improvised. An Erhardt would do for the Freikorps.

Thanks for that Mark.  I'm just really interested in reading about personal accounts of the campaign and the battles. The information on the 'Pigmy Wars' site was very good and informative.
As to armoured trains, I see Copplestone has released one in 28mm....it looks really quite good.  Have you any idea where I could get an Erhardt in 28mm (???) - don't know if that's possible, but it's always worth asking :)

The Copplestone train is beautiful, but not really what was used in Latvia.

I game the period in 15mm, so no idea on models.

Have you read "The Outlaws" by von Salomon? I found it very hard to follow, but it does give a perspective on the German side.

"Cowan’s War: the Story of British Naval Operations in the Baltic, 1918 - 1920" by Geoffrey Bennett is a great book, which covers the Latvian, Estonian and Russian operations from a naval perspective. Republished recently as "Freeing the Baltic".

Then there is "L'Aventure Allemande en Lettonie" by Lieutenant General Du Parquet. I translated most of this into English, if you are interested.

After that you are into the native languages I'm afraid.

Very interesting stuff there Mark.  Where did you manage to get "The Outlaws" from? - it's one of the books I've been after!!!  Yes, I'd be interested in Lieutenant General Du Parquets "The German Adventure in Latvia".  Has it taken you quite a while to translate it?  I shall certainly look into Geoffrey Bennets book as well.
