Xebecs!
« on: 23 May 2020, 03:57:56 PM »
I started having a look at the new scenario packs from Wordtwister Publishing in the week. This has lead me down a whole new rabbithole as I went looking for Xebecs to match against my 17th Century boats for one of the scenarios.

Blog stuff here...

I have got this far and now I need to break out the greystuff and work out how to do some new rigging...

(The donor model is a Warlord Black Sails sloop and the base is by Fenris Games.)

The conversion looks really good and looking foward to seeing it come along.

One slight question - isn't the base a little too chunky for the miniature?

I'll follow this thread to see this interesting conversion finished!
Cheers!

I decided to write up my steps in building my own Xebec, so that others can learn from my mistakes!

Oh, that's coming along nicely.

Here is a link to my attempt to do the exact same thing a couple of years ago. I was helped out (almost entirely) by a mate with the conversion work.

That’s very pretty and I am sure I was inspired by your efforts before mine.

The first Xebec finished. And how I got there (click here.)

I have given the base a flat coat of blue just for the photo tbh. I usually add waves from epoxy putty but I just ran out of Milliput. Any other suggestions of what to use gratefully received.

Hu Rhu asked if these bases aren't a little chunky? I quite like the chunkiness personally and it gives me the chance to add wave texture (vital for when I mess up waterlining a model!) I am pretty much stuck with them now as I don't do re-basing except under extreme duress and I already have a dozen 16th and 17th Century models on these.

I finished off the Mark 2 Xebec, so I thought I'd show the pair of them (bases still not finished...)

I am quite happy with the overall effect and they will serve their purpose well. Not bad for about 9 hours work and using bits and pieces I had lying around.

Very nice.  How do you intend to do the bases?
