Opponents for my Scrobbits?
« on: 04 August 2009, 10:41:54 PM »
Well, while they still need to be flocked, my Scrobbits, purchased from the late lamented Olley's Armies, are now ready to go. In case you aren't familiar with them, these are essentially space hobbits/halflings in trenchcoats and quasi Danish helmets, with a variety of weapons, supported by a few gun toting sentry drones from GZG. (I'll try to get some pictures up once I've found my flock!) Think of it as the Shire having its own space colony;)

I'd really like to use these guys in a fun game, but I'm drawing a blank when it comes to potential opponents. Does anybody here have any suggestions? Preferably in ranges that are already available OR that could be fairly easily converted? I was thinking a bug hunt might be fun, or something along the lines of sci-fi zombies as opponents. Even better, something that further dwarfs my little heroes (some sort of Bigguns) would be great.

Any ideas, suggestions, etc? I haven't put on a non-Pulp sci-fi game in a while, so I'd be very interested to see/read your ideas.
(And rules suggestions would be great too, although I suspect that'd partly depend upon who these insidious baddies would be.)

Thanks!

-Doc

I second the Ogres idea! Doesn't GW make SciFi Ogryns with guns?
Jane! Stop this crazy thing!

That is a good idea, gentlemen, but to be quite honest, to quote one of my heroes... I'm looking to avoid any Imperial entanglements...;)

you could maybe pit them against hasslefrees kindred? For a true pint sized battle, or maybe some alien greys?

I was thinking a bug hunt might be fun, or something along the lines of sci-fi zombies as opponents. Even better, something that further dwarfs my little heroes (some sort of Bigguns) would be great.

Being cute little guys, hobbits are easiest to relate to and empathise with when confronted by nightmarish bad guys I think.

Rather than using sci-fi ogres or some other fantasy element I think that the contrast of using some "gritty" sci-fi opponents would be more fun.  I have played many games that included hobbits and ogres but a lot less that pitched hobbits against genocidal AIs in skeletal humanoid chassis for example.

Hobbits versus terminators/Cyberdyne sounds like good fun to me.  If you included a few larger 'bots the contrast with the hobbits would be entertainingly extreme.  Copplestone and EM4 make a lot of suitable robots for starters.  GW Necrons would be good too.

Similarly the image of the shire in space being overrun by acid-for-blood xenomorphs would be a stark contrast that firmly roots the little guys in the sci-fi realm.  Horrorclix Aliens from the AVP sets are perfect.  The larger GW Tyranid figures would really dwarf astro-Frodo and co and fulfil the nightmare criteria perfectly (that may count as an "Imperial entanglement" however).
(Coincidentally I put up a few photos of some very quickly painted Tyranid figures on my blog today that might give you some ideas).
A bunch of plucky little armed hobbits making a last stand against Starship Troopers arachnids would be a very cool looking game I think.

Anyway, I would avoid further fantasy elements personally.  Make sure to post up those photos when you find your flock.  I am intrigued by the hobbit idea now...

Might have to find some aliens.

The Horrorclix guys that you pointed out are great figures and the paintjob, while not stellar is perfect for a "horde" IMO.  Personally I wouldnt be bothered to repaint them, although I did rebase. It felt that the paint job was good enough to copy it for my various bug figures.  While individually they may look a little rough they have a pleasing effect as a group: they look just like I imagine they should.  Crucially for me a quick paint job means that the project actually gets finished too :)

The alien queen Horrorclix figure is also very good, assuming that you are inclined to have your hobbits take on such a classic movie monster.

Matakishi is currently working on a Aliens-y project which might give you some ideas.

I dont want to hijack this thread regarding Aliens stuff so I will leave it at that.  I am sure that there are plenty of other good hobbit adversarial ideas out there :)

I'd go for a "colonial" type thing with GW's fantasy Ogres or for something a bit more pleasing to the eye how about elves - Foundry's Nymphs are great figures.

Having said that I like the other ideas above - so why not make up a band of desperadoes from all sorts of sources like the  badies in Mel Brookes "Blazing Saddles"  - "Badges!, Badges! We don't need no steeenking badges!"

Thanks for your suggestions, guys. All of them are great, and i"ll probably end up painting more than one force of bad guys before I'm done.

I think I've found some good opponents for the scenarios in my mind, though - the Dreenoi from Reverisco. These are insectoid aliens armed with a variety of weapons, sucide bombs, etc. Just perfect. They are in the "Starguard" range, or do a search for Dreenoi alternatively.

Also, have my "ash waste flock" located, so I'm (very slowly) finishing up the Scrobbits. Will post some photos here when they are ready.

You do know that the original quote is from "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", right...?
