Seeking 28mm fantasy spiders.
« on: 22 June 2020, 03:52:59 PM »
I am seeking a large number of spiders of various species/designs/types.

I want everything from a couple of mm up to maybe 30mm in size MAXIMUM. I want dozens and dozens of them.
I am making a large spider swarm to compliment my old Grenadier spider riding goblins...

I'm NOT after feature/character models. I want a variety of cheap (but still detailed) models in any material to fill out the bases.

I also have a number of riderless spiders to make wizard summoned swarms too.

Are there any ranges which include spiders as 'bitz' on the sprue, that people may have many of knocking around I could do a deal for? I was wondering if any of the AoS Spiderfang Grot, or gloom spire kits, have 'spare' spiders that people would part with for pennies?

I have tried a couple of ranges of cheap plastic novety halloween spiders - but the soft plastic and poor moulding makes them very unsuitable for painting up.

Anyone with spiders to offer or suggestions of where to look are welcome too.

cheers

Those would be my first option too, also have some of the Alternative Armies resin spiders (small and big ones) which might suit your needs but they have some others too https://www.alternative-armies.com/search?q=spider

According to the blog on their website, “This set will feature multi-part large spiders along with smaller swarm types.”

Reaper has a ton:
https://www.reapermini.com/search/spider

Otherworld has some too:
http://otherworldminiatures.co.uk/?s=spider&post_type=product

Thanks but Reaper has a number of very large spiders - the only smaller ones (i'm looking for small and tiny) are not in bones plastic ansd so are the same price as fullsizes figures.

Those otherworld spiders look great, but they are enormous and expensive.

Irregular Miniatures do some spiders. I’m not sure what range they are though (could be 10mm or 15mm) as I picked mine up from Vapnartak possibly last century  :o , that are large (dog sized) to a 28mm Figure.

These "large" spiders from Otherworld Miniatures are the cat's pyjamas.

At £14 for three, they're a little bit on the pricey side, but such wonderful sculpts.
Those are 25mm bases, so they're about "man-sized".

Bow and blade have 3D printed hard plastic ones, £6 for a pack of 6, they're quite nice - about the 28mm scale size of a smallish dog. Worth a look anyway

Ah, you mean these beasties from Bow and Blade:

https://bowandblade.co.uk/product/28mm-spiders-pack-of-6/

They do look reasonably nice, and for £6 for a pack of 6, you can hardly go wrong. I would expect this is the cheapest offering, unless you have your own 3D printer.

Has anyone actually painted these up? It would be nice to see a painted set.

Check out Ral Partha Europe Demonworld stuff. Scaled for 15mm, but I don't think that's a problem based on your first post.

They look pretty good too thanks ... a little more pricey but certainly in the smaller scale and good sculpts too!

I know that you discounted the reaper spiders but these will meet the few mm to 30 mm size in bones that would help bulk out a horde.
https://www.reapermini.com/search/spiders/latest/77126
Out of stock at the moment but they cast them up pretty regularly.  Mine on 25mm bases
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Uz_03r3wSCM/V8bdMN6vWyI/AAAAAAAABQA/wA2Ff81QHnkZY3mYT1J4wFDgbGW-tOlWgCLcB/s1600/DSC05984.jpg

With this swarm base you could instamould any of the individual sculpts and add those all over your huge horde.
https://www.reapermini.com/search/spider/latest/77128
Max size on any of those small ones is about 4mm.

The 3d printed ones that PhilB pointed out look like they will fit the bill but are limited on poses and have limited size variation to use by themselves.
The 15mm models that Irregular Wars Nick would work too but again with limited size and sculpt variation.

With your sculpting abilities you could probationally get away with sculpting several different size spiders laying flat out, making a simple one sided press mould then casting loads and positioning them as the putty is setting.  Your Mother of Spiders comes to mind for the skill set.
https://www.bearsheadminis.com/store/p137/Mother_of_Spiders_Metal.html
The details on the underside will not matter so much and you do not need to worry about high detail as that will get lost in the mass of legs.

My two cents.  Hope it helps.
