Primer glossy issue?
« on: 23 July 2020, 10:44:12 AM »
Tried a new rattle can primer that came out a bit glossy.  Better to spray again with a flat primer or overspray with a dulling clear coat before painting?

Morning fifteens, this happens with monotonous regularity to me >:( I'm too heavy handed with even the mattest (is that a word!?!!) of primers but when everything is dry and shiny I spray with a clear coat of Army Painter anti shine. Don't know if that's the right thing to do but it gets the primed piece back flat and thankfully I haven't had or seen any adverse effects yet. Hope that helps

Thanks, Johnny Boy, I was hoping that would be the way to go.  Alas, my challenge wasn't the volume of spray but the nature of the paint.  I will be going back to Krylon red primer to avoid the issue in the future and save the suspect paint for other uses one day, maybe out in the garden where the sun will dull the paint pretty quick - living in California where the daily temperature the last few weeks has topped out above 90 fahrenheit and reached 104 fahrenheit.  But it is a dry heat!  lol

No that it is all that helpful, but I over sprayed a different primer with my airbrush and relegated the offending spray back to the craft bin for the kids.  Then cursed myself for being lazy not setting up the airbrush to begin with.

Hi,

I always prime with a matt black then undercoat the whole model with Gesso. Gesso just sucks the moisture away and leaves a wonderfully flat matt black surface where any detail on the model is nice and easy to see.

Just don't buy cheap Gesso.
