strange aeons agent lovecraft
« on: August 08, 2009, 07:34:41 PM »
just finished the Ltd edition agent lovecraft figure from Uncle mike,

nice figure, the faces shading isn't as abrupt in real life as it appears in the photo,

the too strong dark lining around the hand is though sadly. :-[

still working on getting better transition of tones,

Forgive my criticism, but I don't understand why you're lamenting the darklining around his hand when he has similar chasms on his face.  And along those lines, I don't understand why his flesh-colored face would be shaded in black when his grey suit is shaded in merely darker grey.

hi Mancha,

no offence taken.

i was trying to make it clear that the face on the model in the flesh  doesn't have any black lining, that's only in the photo, but the other black lines are there and are too heavy.

i'm trying to eliminate the black lining hence why the suits only in shades of grey.

What kind of camera are you using? Looks like there's some extreme photo processing going on, like in really cheap phone cameras. As you can see, the shadings appear pitch black. It's something I've never seen before in normal photography. A few clues about your setup and image conversion would be appreciated.

hi dolmot,

it's a sony cybershot. photo taken in the garden in normal daylight.
The picture is then brightened up in picturewindow to improve the contrast, ( the daylight seems to bleach it out) but it does do some odd things
with some colours.

I'm still trying different settings.

I like this one, Fairoaks. I think you'll eventually find the combo that works for you, so no worries. He's an excellent starting point, and looks fine as is.

Still anxiously awaiting the delivery of my copy of Strange Aeons. Looking forward to reading through it!

cheers Doc,

i hope your copy turns up soon, you'll enjoy it,

it's become our groups skirmish game of choice very quickly. Hopefully
it'll do well and uncle mike can produce more figures and a supplement
with many more eldritch horrors.....

Thanx Jim,

Lovecraft looks great (i would use a lighter undercoat on the flesh...) and thanx for all the kind words! More horrors and madness to come... :P

His eyes are VERY well painted.

Looks perhaps too assertive to be diffident HPL.

I wonder how one would paint for a 'diffident' look ?

Very odd painting effect, acutally looks more like your avatar pic with that heavy black and flesh! ;)

Personally not a fan of the heavy block highlight and shading myself, if this is a processing error then post up some proper pics soon so we have have a good old look.

Cheers

Great figure.  And I want one, Unc' Mike.   :'(
Will you re-release it, or another pose of the great master, pretty please with eyelashes batting madly insanely?

I'm running a campaign where (Shhh!) the ultimate goal is to stop HPL himself from causing all this chaos from simply imagining it.  The timeline parallels his real historical life, and the stories he wrote of course!  It's 1921 at the moment, but the investigators will probably meet him within the next game year or two...  and I should hate to be without a fig for the occasion.

Lights and paint do funny things.  I have a few gems in my display cabinet which I can never get photographed well either.  A figure on the gaming table doesn't have to be painted like a Michaelangelo to look good.  If people are paying that much attention to the detail, the game isn't that interesting.

I've personally gone through many stages of miniature painting through the years.  The most significant changes points have all been in the use of different priming colors (Black, later Gray and finally White) and the use of washes.  I can say I've tried them all at length now, and I really think that for most human figures a white undercoat with a thin black or brown wash really photographs and displays well for color.

I've gotten quite a few E-mails and comments on ol' Lovie. I may cave to public pressure and re-release him in the next Threshold Operatives pack. Strangely, I've got a second sculpt of Lovecraft as well...as a zombie! May add 'Zombie Lovecraft' into the next Assorted Undead pack...will have to see.

Awww... then maybe instead do also a seated Lovecraft and do a triple pack of just him?  Or... how about a Poe to make a triple?
