ESO Oblivion gate terrain piece construction ideas

I got some ideas on how I would like to do this with leds and mirrors but suspending it...

any ideas on how to construct this so that the chains supported the piece? I thought about getting some plastic chain and glueing the links together but I am not confident it would hold over time. Is there a way I can sort of weld the plastic chain links together? Or maybe I could use metal chain and solder them to remain erect?

For welding the plastic chain there, that is what most plastic glues do, melt the two pieces together.  The glue would have to match the plastic so if it is a PVC based chan then a PVC solvent glue. It should work quite well for a lighter structure but plastic chain in most cases is quite big and you may not be able to find something that works for you. 

For metal you can solder them together but with contact areas that small it may not be enough to support the weight of the model that sits on top.  If one link goes then the whole thing will go. 

Another option that I have seen is to sculpt the chain over a wire rod.  Bees putty use to do a press mould to make chain links over wire.  Unfortunately it does not look like it is still on their website atm but you might find one or a knock off one either on the ebay or the interents.  Here is a separate toot on sculpting using a home made press mould.  The same technique may work to embed a wire into the chain.  https://masteroftheforge.com/2012/10/23/tutorial-green-stuff-chains/

What about drilling a hole throught the chain lengthways and using a long brass rod (Might be a bit tricky though)

Buy a 3d printer and 3d print the lengths.

If part of the ring was to 'brush' a tree you could hide
a support in & among the branches, then the chains
could just hang down. I know the idea works as (many
years ago) I made a Sci-fi craft coming in to land. It
seemed to be floating, but in reality a strong metal
(bent) rod ran up the tree & through the tiny part
of the ship that touched the tree.

In our office we have a Dark Anchor that was made by a fan (I think). Fortunately, there are still a few folks in the office so one of them was able to snap a few pictures of it. Maybe this will help.
