Bad day to give up the booze.
« on: 22 August 2020, 11:19:01 AM »
The arse end of no-where, or officially, 'Leeming's settlement.
No-one knew, could remember or cared who Leeming was, but a few
settlers still worked the local Karak (High priced mineral) seams.

All contact with the settlement has been lost. A team has to be sent,
& 'Killer Cunningham's (Played by my friend Simon) squad has drawn the
short straw.

Orders:- 'Investigate!... & if no-one is alive find out what happened'
[This means you must bring back the Data Banks]
If you manage to pick up some refined Karak, & don't report it...
well you deserve a bonus, don't you?

This was Simon's first game of Galactic Heroes.
Jokers were used.
1st =The first  Skimmer will fly over,  & be available for retrieving the squad.
2nd = It will fly off.
3rd = The other (i.e. last) Skimmer will fly over, but fly off upon drawing the 4th Joker.
Miss the last Skimmer & it is a LOOOONG  walk home.

First picture = The set up.
Second = One of the natives (My Kroot getting a rare outing)
listens to the whine of the Skimmer's approach.
Third = The patrol lands (Simon chose the side nearest him, sensible as
most of the buildings were there.)

1) A local moves closer.
2) The patrol starts checking doors. One opens, the next is locked but they unlock it quickly.
The third they try... Locked & jammed (Simon threw a '1' on the test = bad news). The trooper
then tried to blast the door open. He only managed to damage it more.
At no point do any of them try and examine all the dead bodies lying around!
3)The noise of shooting up the door attracts more Kroot & they close with the patrol.
4) At least one trooper is sensible & seeks hard cover.

1) First Joker = Skimmer begins its fly over. As a result the Kroot fire at it.
(Kroot were on D8s for shooting, so keep missing)
2) Attention of the locals drawn to the 'Umans' & several run towards them.
3) 'Bloody 'ell there's a lot of them Sarge' View from the Human side.
4) Against the odds a few of the Kroot shots hit the Skimmer. The pilot moves it,
to get some big rocks between him & the Bogies.

Thing began to hot up, hence fewer pictures.
Suffice it to say much shooting. Kroot were dropping, but so where troopers.
ONE  damaged data bank was recovered.
Second Joker meant the first Skimmer left for safer climes.
Third Joker soon after meant the arrival of the LAST skimmer.
Simon was VERY aware that with the next Joker it would be pulling out too.

As the Kroot had closed (a lot) two things happened. They started to get hits
on the Skimmer, reducing its movement, &  hand to hand fights started (Kroot
got D10s for them).

The one attempt to get some Karak, led to a trooper leaving the hard cover &
opening one of the nearby containers, only to find it empty (Easy test = get 5+,
but Simon threw a 3!!!!) To add injury to insult he was hit twice by the normally
inaccurate Kroot fire.

Back to the pictures.
1) Panic to get onto the last Skimmer
2) Skimmer has taken too many hit & with its extra load won't lift off.
This led to some very frantic 'repair work' (Kicking the mechanics & swearing a lot)
by the troopers while desperate firing at savage Kroot.
3) Simon managed, just, to achieve lift off just as a ferocious Kroot leapt on!
A frenzied melee ensued. One , already wounded soldier effectively ripped apart!!
But Cunningham fired twice & blew the Kroot out of the now 20' in the air Skimmer.
(The advantage of being a Veteran & throwing D12s).

At that point we called an end to the game & settled down to Pizza & beans, as well as
the usual post battle chat.

Simon said he had enjoyed the game. It was a 'mission failure' was his view. 60% fatalities.
The one corrupted data bank was still on one of the killed troopers (oops!).
Only one attempt to get some Karak was to open an empty container!
His leader (Cunningham) had a negative trait of 'Drunkard' which means he starts the game
as if he already has a wound. I did point out (twice) that he could use a Queen of Hearts card
to activate Cunningham & sober him up (remove the 'wound')but in the chaos he kept forgetting.
The Kroot too viewed it as a failure. The Tribal Dirges have been heard...
 Two 'Umans' got away!

If you haven't tried Galactic Heroes, or any of the Fist Full of Lead rules,
I heartily recommend them. Not for rule lawyers, but give a great narrative
driven fun game. It allows use of a few figures each & a quick game.

Great stuff has.been, very inspiring. I think I need to put more small games on to the table as they nearly always inspire me and lead to a mini boost of hobby positivity. I love the flyer usage and being randomised - those particular land speeders can be stretched very easily to make a skimmer that looks a bit more capable of carrying 5-8 chaps.

Keep it up,
