Ragweed/Goldenrod?
« on: 29 September 2020, 12:17:02 AM »
Hello,

Can anyone recommend a way to make ragweed or goldenrod in 28mm?  In other words, how to make waist-high yellow-flowering plants?

Alternatively, is there anyone who sells something like this in 28mm?

Thanks very much.
Now what is this whole life of mortals but a sort of comedy, in which the various actors, disguised by various costumes and masks, walk on and play each one his part, until the manager waves them off the stage?

Just from the top of my head. Green clump foliage sprinkled with yellow flock.

I made a mustard field from a green coconutfibre floormat sprinkled with yellow flock.

Noch has these in 12mm high tufts so almost knee high on most models:

For taller ragwort there are these and the company does have them with some yellow:

I think that you would need to add more flowers for the effect and it is a bit of an expensive way to do it unless you can reverse engineer them.
I also found a railroad toot that might fit the bill with a little tweaking.

Model railroad supplies have just about everything flora.  I've used the Late Summer Goldenrod which is a little less flowery with the leaves turning yellow along the back of the Van Allan House here.  I also re-flocked some of it with purple and cut the stems taller for the Joe Pye Weed by the far corner.

Ziterdes nettle has the right profile; dusting the tops with fine yellow flock may work.

They also have ferns that have a similar profile: link.

Thanks to all for the recommendations!  I will try some of the purchased ones but will use the coconut mat approach for some larger patches.

Much appreciated.

You could make individual ones by using hoghair brush bristles and paint them up this way, but using greens and yellows:

And if you want to make a carpet of them, and horsehair isn’t available where you are, you could get this rubberized coconut fiber material:

https://www.onlinefabricstore.net/1-x-24-rubberized-hair-.htm

The rubberized material takes spray paint extremely well, and you can then flock as needed.  I tease out the material and use it for mangrove treetops:

I think Cat’s suggestion is the best looking but as an alternative there is this http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/scenery-and-resin/970-tall-shrubbery-brown-green.html (which you can also get on eBay) which comes in a variety of colours and you could easily add a bright yellow top with flock or paint to a suitable colour (maybe the white-green or light green option).

Good luck in your hunt,
