Ancien Regime grand skirmish rules
« on: 27 October 2020, 12:19:37 PM »
Are there any wargames rules for the Ancien Regime (1750-1806) period with emphasis on patrols, avant/rearguard action and cavalry skirmishes? I'd love to be able to do skirmishes like Zehdenick, Altenzaun and the night before the battle of Jena (all 1806), and even smaller actions between two patrols, feeding in more formed troops perhaps at a 1:10 scale with (half)companies as the basic unit.

I have read that C.S Grant was working on skirmish rules, but haven't seen any information on them. I'm looking for something like a mixture of Sharp Practice, Infamy!Infamy!, Chain of Command and Chef de Bataillon or so. There need to be cavalry flankers, vedettes and hidden patrols. Any ideas?

Thank you,
Eltjo

i 've gamed Vendée  and Brittany  Rebellions and even revolts against Republican French in the south of Italy (some times supported by British marines and navy ) with TSATF...a colonial well known semi-skirmish set amended for early periods (they are plenty of versions for different periods) whose scale is about 1:10 but you can amend also the scale..i must admit that my main periods of games are asymetrical wars for which skirmish scenarios work well...

Thanks Italwars, I'll give TSATF a try, as well as Company Commander by Capitan Games. The latter seems to fit the bill with three units of 6-12 men forming a company, rules for concealed units, dismounted cavalry and hidden movement.

Greuthungi, I'm no apologist for 2FL but doesn't Sharpe Practice 2 fit the bill?

Rebels and Patriots or SP2 are great for skirmish games for the period.

I love Sharp Practice, but I'd like to be able to go up a level to company level wargames too. Now it is either 1:5 scale as in Sharp Practice, then at least 1:20 for tactical games. Chef de Batallion is at the right level, but too complicated for the average club game. Company Commander has some good ideas, including concealed units, hidden movement and the cavalry flankers I was looking for. I shall report back on it.

Muskets & Tomahawks is good for this.

You could use Black Powder. In their AWI scenario book they used BP on various levels
