Best Wild West Mats?
« on: 08 November 2020, 06:20:21 AM »
Looking to see what all out there works well as a mat for Wild West minis gaming.

Suggestions?

I always suggest looking at Tiny Wargames; I like their stuff very much indeed.
The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

I've got the Wild West town mat from Tiny Wargames and I am very happy with it, I did have the railway removed though as I did not want that. https://www.tinywargames.co.uk/wild-west

Im really liking the second one (the one without the tracks).  I can see loads of uses for it.

I'm a huge fan of Deep Cut Studios "Steppe" pattern mat, mainly because it's dry scrubby brush and drier grass --- and because it's useful for almost any wargame imaginable.   It just so happens to work very well as a desert mat.

Excellent suggestion!  Beautiful setups, both of them.

Indeed, Elbows, thanks for the pictures!
Where'd you get the buildings in the top image? they look more resilient than the mdf town in the second photo.

Is it the Russian Steppe or Sagebrush Steppe pattern, Elbows? Thanks.

The adobe buildings are resin hand-painted by Crescent Root Studios - they no longer produce them.  They did, however, sell the sculpts to somebody a few years ago, but I don't know if that company ever started selling them.  Maybe worth a little googling.

The mat is their old one which was simply called "Steppe".  It may have been replaced by now.  While looking at their site, I couldn't help but notice they have a new one called "Prairie" which may be worth a look?

It appears they have replaced my mat with "Steppe V2".  I can't speak to this one though, as mine is the older design:

Cigar Box Battle Mats made 2 in their last Kickstarter, Town of Liberty and Rattlesnake Ranch.

I don't own these ones [yet], but I have quite a few of their mats and love the material, never creases of wrinkles.
