Warhammer Colonial ruleset
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:53:17 PM »
I have heard that (all being well) Warhammer Historical will be releasing a set of Colonial (specifically Zulu War) rules in 2010, based on the WHAB system, albeit heavily modified.

Now the changes in the WH Historical organisation have been put in place, they are committing themselves to get projects out faster.

Its (apparently) the usual WH formula - rules, scenarios, lists and historical sections along with (possibly) a mini campaign.

Cool. I'm a sucker for their books.  Although it must be said I seldom end up playing them, they are great for reading while on the toilet. Still haven't played a game of 'Great War' yet, and I've had it since it came out. Being rather shallow and immature, I just like looking at the pretty pictures.

And welcome to the LAF. Excellent choice of Colonial Adventures as the setting for your first post.  :)

Yes, they are a delight to look at - especially the pretty pictures!

The trouble is, I have so many Colonial rules now that I doubt I'd ever play a new Warhammer version.

Maybe this set will be called "Warhammer Colonial" (with the obvious abbreviation) in honour of Plynkes' bowel movements  ;)

Any Warhammer Historical game seems to arouse people's interest around here so I probably would buy it, even if there's no afghans in it. But I thought that WH was reorganizing or taking a break or whatever, aren't they?

They're back up and running now after the changes, with the new website and all.

From the rumours I have heard I think it may be a more diverse spread of rules/periods not just core systems such as WAB

I thought I was the only one gross enough to read rules books on toilets. I agree there is nothing better then settling down in my "office" with the latest rulebook, painting guide etc.

Glad to see a fellow book bogger!  lol

I would certianly buy this. I already run my colonial games using a converted version of WHH's The Great War.

But where else can you get five minutes peace to get your head round a trickily worded rules description? The throne room is the only place you won't be disturbed. At least in my house.

Seriously though, I've never played a WAB style game, but I've heard mixed things about them. Some people say they are great, fast playing easily understood rules, others that they are too simplistic and don't give any depth to the forces used.

So what's the good word, cos I am actually tempted by some of them...?

I'd recommend them, although I can understand why others don't like them (however, the relationship with GW probably affects some people's judgements). The books themselves are well written and the layout is superb, not to mention the photographs. The rules are fairly simple, and have a few weak points, but these can generally be fixed with a minimum of common sense. I thoroughly enjoy them, and use them in just about every other game I play, or a modified version. It is certainly a set that is easy to change or modify. And if you're into army lists then there's few places better than Warhammer Historical...

If they say it's coming in 2010 you can expect it sometime in 2015. Don't hold your breath. I have been waiting for "Over The Top" since last November.
