War of the Dwarves and the Orcs (kinda)
Finding ourselves missing most of our regular Zoom gaming group yesterday, I threw together a very quick Dragon Rampant scenario featuring an Orc force trying to break into a Dwarven stronghold. The board featured two large entrances (clearly the oaken gates themselves had been shattered in previous fighting) leading to the halls of the underground fortress. The gates were guarded by two Dwarven units, with the remainder of the force arriving randomly on turns 1-4 of the game.
The Orcs, commanded by myself, took an early lead as the troll vanguard crushed the Dwarf scouts at the southern gate. This allowed a unit of Wargs to rush through and attempt to take the northern gate guardians by surprise; alas, I had forgotten about the ‘wild charge’ rule. The Dwarf king and his bodyguard (Elite foot) had arrived within charge distance and so my Wargs were forced into a vicious running battle with them - inflicting some serious casualties, but ultimately expiring and removing the chance of a rear attack.
The Dwarves at the north gate (Heavy foot) were the heroes of the day, repelling attacks by three separate Orc units (Light foot), leaving them all battered. With all the Dwarf reinforcements arriving in the southern chamber, the Goblins were driven out in short order.
DR worked brilliantly for this game - very easy to run over Zoom - and both Tom and I were left agreeing to play again soon.
