1/200 - 1/300 scale alien mecha?
« on: March 21, 2021, 12:41:24 PM »
Anyone found a source of small scale Alien looking mecha for Battletech type games?  Looking for something (anything?) that is obviously different style than the blocky bipedal angular Battletech models to use alonside my Mekton/Gundam figures.

Ideally mecha (Neon Genesis Evangelion or similar) or even something more natural looking (Mekton Hardshell?)

Currently my choices seem to be the Robotech Tactics Zentradi (very limited options) or picking an insectoid theme from Battletech type ranges.
There is a lot of lovely artwork out there but very little seems to have made it to 3D.

What size (in mm) of figures are you looking for?

Epic Tyranids would seem a likely option, particularly the bigger bio titans (back middle of the photo)

Dark Realm Miniatures (if they are still available) had some possiblities, on the 20mm or so tall range. (Back left of the photo)

Yeah, I suppose I should have thought about that  :?

The mecha I have come out at 40-50mm so monster types would need to look OK at that size.

I did not think about GW but those big tyranid titans would certainly work. Unfortunately a quick scan of eBay shows them to be well out of my price range.  DRM do seem to have gone but Vanguard and Onslaught have a couple of smaller (light mech?) size figures in a similar style.

How about Warlord Games' Ghar battlesuits?  Plastic so easy to convert, several different variants, fairly inexpensive for their size (about $11 each) and they pop up on sale pretty regularly.  Certainly very alien looking.

You can even rotate them 90 degrees for a very different look, although you'd have to do a little work to get the legs on them - you can see some floating variants over here for an idea what I'm talking about:

 https://brokenstarsburningships.blogspot.com/2019/05/gates-of-antares-grav-droid-conversions.html

You might also take a look at some of Mantic's scifi range, particularly the Asterians.  The Marionette box in particular is very cheap and a gold mine for bits and conversions, and while they're a little small at ~30mm height you could do a graft of the legs and the floating drones to get something akin to the Zentraedi pod look but much more amenable to mods.  Again, some images of grav variants here:

https://brokenstarsburningships.blogspot.com/2018/03/dance-puppets-deadzone-marionette-kit.html

Between the two I'd bet you could make something pretty nifty.

If you are looking at 30mm or so, then WH40k Tyranids might work - they should be available fairly cheaply

Also worth a look at Dropzone Commander stuff

Remembered winters bioforge https://wintersbioforge.com/ not cheap, but resin models that are a fair bit bigger than original epic so might work for you. I’ve got photos with other nid stuff if it would help

Thanks, more good options to think about.
An obviously alien "creature" force rather than mecha seems to be the simplest solution given the available figures. That would be a good fit with the Mekton universe.

Khurusan also has some things to go with these though they will be large against 30-40mm mechs. Look under space demons in 15mm though the monster figures will all be a good bit bigger than most 28mm-ish mech  minis.

Alternative Armies has what in 6mm would be giant floating brains with weapons grafted to the end of their spinal columns and they have a giant brain in resin on a mechanical platform thing to lead them. Check under their Hordes of the Future HOF range They also have Dominator spheres and a crab robot for the old Laserburn line.

https://www.alternative-armies.com/collections/15mm-laserburn-and-asgard-ranges?page=4

check out their 15mm Ion Age line for some massice War Wheel type things that would be something you might be able to sell in 6mm as a small land ship type super tank.

Finally, CP Models has all kinds of weird monsters to look into.

Oh and if you want Zentraedi there is a semi-pricy resin line out with all sorts of Macross stuff including the Zentraedi Bodol force's tactical regult(battle pod) (3 per pack), recon regult(3), light artillery regult(3), heavy missile regult(3), glaug (officer's pod)(1), Nousjaduel Ger zentran powered armor(1), Quedlun Rau Meltran powered armor(1), and Zentaedi ground troops in heavy combat armor(3).

They also have the destroids including the monster, along with the valkyries, supervalkyries, armored valkyries, and the valkyrie with rocket booster on a launcher.

 :o

Kind of makes me wish I was looking at a 15mm Sci-fi project rather than just an OpFor to use with my Mekton models. Thanks
