A paintbrush rack from scrap foam
« on: 29 March 2021, 04:09:32 AM »
It's well known that allowing paintbrushes to dry bristle down is better for them, but I'm sure I'm not the only one here who knows that and still has most of their brushes in a bucket or mug, bristles sticking up into the air because frankly, that's easier.

I realized I could mount a paintbrush drying & storage rack on one side of my painting bench, though, up out of the way but easily accessible. A little bit of experimentation showed that even quite large brushes could be held comfortably in slits cut into 3/4" foam, the sort used in Infinity figure box sets and many other places.

I pulled some scrap cardboard from the blue box, sliced a chunk of scrap foam lengthwise, put some slits in it every inch or so, about an inch and a half deep, hot glued the foam and cardboard together, then hot glued the resulting construction to the underside of a shelf on one edge of my painting bench, and the result works incredibly well and took only a few minutes to construct.

The slit foam idea was sparked by one of the lasercutting outfits that does a brush rack in lasercut MDF that comes with a strip of similar foam pre-slit to hold brushes; I can't remember which one nor is looking through my browser history being helpful!

It'll even hold the fat handles of the cheap makeup brushes I use for drybrushing, and the big 2.5" housepainting brush I use for big terrain pieces.

I love it!  This has got me thinking now.
Gods, monsters and men,
Will die together in the end.
