Dodge Old Boy,

They are looking good, I like the colours on the Marines and the Cossacks.

I tend to agree with Chris about the basing though.

Perhaps if you don't want to move away from the natural look, perhaps a ink wash over the gravel would tone it down a bit and give it some contrast or go and paint it then drybrush over the top.

Or buy some sand as suggested. But hey they are your figures go with what you feel appropriate and I would happily play a game with you using them.

I am seeing this as a journey,

At the start it was all about painting and the feel of my style,

In the LPL the comments were tidy the bases around the edges which I do all the time,

and now I've got to c'mon you can cahange this a bit on the base and it will look better,

so its all great advice and taken on board then they may look even better than they do now 

everything anybody ever says is always taken on board and besides we all want our figs to look brilliant don't we   

so next time we may have a little change

Thats basically what I do, mix your sand, bird seed etc small grains with paint over and a wash and drybrush gove a good look. For large rocks add them afterwards to taste alongside grass.flock etc

I think what I will do is change it slightly.

At the moment I stick to washers and then polyfiller round then paint an earthy colour and add the flock and static grass,

so I'll give this method a try then and see what gives

They look very nice, but i have to agree with painting the bases. former user, I find that unpainted bases somehow make the figure look unfinished to me, and also break the "suspension of disbelieve". Instead of looking at a nice miniature scene, I see figs with sand and rocks. this also goes for rocks used for scenery and also plastic plants (unless you are actually playing with Kandahar sand!)

To keep them similar with the other marines I have painted

I did the boots with a base of Tamya Hull Red with a highlight of a reddy brown colour I had from Vallejo it escapes me now what it was called but it worked quite well

I was goping to try your method on some US sailors I have to paint over the next few weeks
