A electric jigsaw should do the trick.

The reason I've chosen steel sheet metal is that I need something fairly big, yet thin and stiff to prevent warping and too much elevation above the gameboard.

I wouldn't try a jigsaw to cut steel you need an angle grinder at least if using a jigsaw count your fingers before you start and make sure the number stays the same

I was a bit worried you'd be right but the steel sheet is untempered and just 1 mm thick. The jigsaw cuts through it like a hot knife through butter.

Progress report:

(sorry about the poor quality photos, I took these in the garage where I have little control over the light sources)

Today, over the lunch break, I drew the shape of the iced over lake onto the 5mm acrylic sheet. I had purchased a new sheets because I deemed the two previous ones two small. I would have preferred their thickness, 3mm,  as 5mm, in 28mm scale, would make for an ice sheet capable of bearing quite a load. Oh, well...



The sheet was cut with an electric jigsaw. I was a bit careless as the sheet cracked in a few places as the cutaway bits put stress on the material.

This, however, proved my choice of material the right one. Just look how beautifully it emulates broken ice! The acrylic sheet, by the way, has a protective film which will be peeled off eventually.



I placed the acrylic sheet on top of the steel sheet and traced its outline with a Sharpie....

This is the jigsaw I use and the two types of blade required. The metal blade actually shattered (not because of the steel, just because of regular inept handling) in the process causing a bit of the usual Hammers blodshed. It is tradition, as you know....



I also drew a margin around it the shape of the frozen lake onto the steel sheet.



And here it is, the basic size and shape of the lake. Or more like a pond really, as I'd say it measures about 60 cm wide.



Next up will be smoothening the edges of the steel sheet and building up an elevated lakeshore. TBC...

Bleeding shows excellent commitment to the cause! You just need to add some sweat and tears to the mix and you have the full set!

I am watching this with particular interest as my entry will also have an icy element, although on a somewhat smaller scale. The acrylic looks great already, and it was not a material I was considering. I have ordered myself some smelly resin to play with, though. You cannot hurt yourself with that, right?
