Help! I'm really struggling with painting leather especially with the lighter buff leathers and rawhide such as Cowboy chaps and FIW leggings. Anyone out there got suggestions? I usually use Vallejo Model Colour and Panzer Aces. Many thanks in advance

A mid brown (or a sandy colour for buff) followed by a wash of Sepia ink works for me.

I use the follwing guide for leather if it helps:

The dark brown guide is my favourite.

I use Colour Party paints for preference and they have both a leather brown and an ECW Buff, depending on what I am going for I tend to use these two in combination. The left two figures below had their gambesons painted using this.

For lighter buff I use ECW buff as a basecoat then paint the basic buff over it as a highlight as below on the waistcoat, gloves etc.

Many thanks for the advice chaps, never used Colour Party but it has the kind of shades I had in mind. How do they compare to Vallejo MC? The link is really useful as well.

vwey different to Valejo, in old fashioned pots rather than squeeze bottles, generally much thicker paint so covers well.

Many thanks Roger. I might invest in some of those. I'm not adverse to mixing but if I can get away with a triad so much the better.
Thanks again

I use Vallejo Green Ochre as a base and then highlight with Iraqi Sand for clothing or Dark Sand for straps.

For natural leather straps and belts then I use Beasty Brown highlighted with thin stripes of ochre.
