A few years back, we played a game with a cavalry column, and an attached Infantry column. It was a weird position to be in as the Army commander. Do you leave the two in close support of each other and give up the mobility of the cavalry, or do you split the command and risk leaving the slow moving Infantry at the mercy of the rapidly moving mounted Indians.
The ultimate outcome was that the Cavalry and Infantry split. The slow moving Infantry offered no support for the Cavalry who were eventually defeated. The Infantry survived, but we all agreed that the long term outcome would not have been a "positive life experience" for the Infantry.
