FBCLID attributes in links
« on: 03 May 2021, 10:47:58 PM »
Hi folks

Just thought I would mention that when you post links into the forums you might want to remove the fbclid attribute from it. For example this recent link (just the last one I saw, not pointing anyone out)

https://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2021/05/rip-richard-halliwell.html?fbclid=IwAR32YuXkaBSMubsw6XU1tMlVyEuA_yorJN49kcWOIHuFDorDOXf65Yd604I&m=1

Has a very long fbclid attribute in the URL.

As part of their efforts to track people despite them blocking trackers, Facebook has been adding these attributes to URLs from Facebook and other site. They then use that attribute to track every use of the link. Even if you don't have a Facebook account or use the site.

So please do everyone a favour and clip those attributes from the URL after you paste it

Like so

I wonder how long before a Chrome update strips those automatically....

Well Google is adding FLOC to their browser so it would just be trading one form of tracking for another

Yeah, I was going to say - it's laughable to think Google isn't in on all of the usual stuff.  :D

Just bumping this to raise awareness as I came across another of these ad trackers on a link today.

If you run a quick search on the forum for " fbclid  " there are over 200 of them currently active in posts here.

Really is a very simple thing to edit the link before you post guys, please don't facilitate this shit.
